SSW MSW Blog

My name is Amanda Glass, and I am a 2nd year MSW Student at UW Tacoma. I am writing to you to request your participation in a brief online survey regarding young adults’ experiences of externalizing problems, such as aggression, substance use, and attention problems. The survey should take about 20 minutes to complete. All people aged 18-25, and especially those with a parent who has experienced a mental illness, are encouraged to participate. This project is a requirement for the University of Washington, Tacoma MSW Program. At the beginning of the survey is an informed consent form containing information about the survey. Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary and all of your responses will be anonymous.

Dear Students,

My name is Freddie Bancroft and I am on the National Walk Team at the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). NEDA is proud to announce our Seattle NEDA Walk on Saturday, May 13 this year is being hosted right in your city! The walk aims to raise awareness and education for eating disorders within the community as well as provide funds to NEDA’s lifesaving programs. NEDA would really love for your group to get involved and help make the Seattle Walk a big success! As future professionals in psychology, it is crucial to raise awareness and support this vital yet misunderstood cause.

How can you get involved? Your program can form a team and fundraise! Join the many universities and student organizations across the country that form teams and raise funds for imperative programs. Students can also help spread the word by hanging provided flyers around the community, sharing on social media, and inviting friends, classmates, and faculty.

We sincerely appreciate your support and thank you for taking the time to share this information with your members. Please let us know if you have any questions or visit our website at https://nedawalk.org/seattle2017 for more event details. We hope to see your group at the NEDA Walk on May 13!

P.S. Students register for a discounted rate and receive a complimentary t-shirt!

We sincerely appreciate your time, consideration and support! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding our event.

Best,

Freddie Bancroft

Funding for Research, Writing or Activist Projects Related to Disability Studies – May 21st

The Disability Studies Program is pleased to announce that the Harlan Hahn Fund call for proposals is now open for Spring Quarter 2017: https://disabilitystudies.washington.edu/HarlanHahnFund.

Current students, faculty, and staff from all three University of Washington campuses are invited to submit a grant proposal. Applications must describe research, writing, or activist projects that are framed within, aligned with, or potentially informed by the academic field of Disability Studies. Please distribute this to anyone who might be interested in applying. The application deadline is 11pm on Sunday, May 21st.

We would love to see robust participation in the Spring Celebration from the School of Social Work!  Both graduate and undergraduate students are invited to apply. Applications are due Monday, April 24th at 11:59 pm and don’t take long to complete! Working with an individual student or group of students who embody the spirit of leadership and service? Encourage them to apply!
Details below! Questions? Email sprcele@uw.edu .

University of Washington students serve and lead, in on-and off-campus communities, to expand their boundaries, to learn from others, and to make a tangible difference in the world. We invite ALL UW students, undergraduate and graduate and from all three campuses, to share how they have worked together to transform their campus and communities, to develop compassionate leadership skills, and to learn from each other.

Students can apply to showcase the ways they are involved in service and leadership in the annual Spring Celebration Gallery of Student Projects which will be held on Wednesday, May 24th, from 2:00-6:30 p.m. in the Husky Union Building (HUB). As part of the Gallery, students present their engagement through a poster display and discuss their service and leadership experiences with other students, faculty, community partners, civic and University leaders. Please note that students are encouraged to attend the entire event, but the time commitment for gallery participants will be approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
Participation in the Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership enables you to:

– Connect with other students doing interesting and meaningful work on campus and in the community

– Share your valuable service and leadership work with a diverse audience

– Hear feedback regarding your project and presentation

– Build your presentation skills and experience

– Expand your resume to include a new public presentation experience!

Tara Ghassemikia, Spring Celebration 2015 participant, shared that she learned how other students were creating impact in their communities and found it to be “humbling and inspiring to present alongside them….This event gave me the opportunity to create and tell my story, and also receive valuable feedback about my project from my friends and strangers alike.”

Applications will be reviewed as they are received and projects are accepted on a space available basis.  All applications to participate are due by April 24th, 2017.

Apply online here!

The UW has passed the Student International Travel Policy (SGP Chapter 211). This policy outlines three important pre-departure requirements for all students traveling abroad for official academic purposes:

  1. Register international travel with the Office of Global Affairs (OGA)
  2. Purchase comprehensive medical and evacuation insurance while abroad
  3. Request a waiver for travel to high risk destinations

Please visit the OGA website for more information and FAQs.

The UW offers a wide variety of opportunities for student engagement abroad, including foreign study programs, international exchanges, research and service learning opportunities, and international internships. Student health, safety, and security are our top priorities. Administered by OGA, the policy establishes health and safety requirements to minimize undue risks to UW students. The spirit of this policy is threefold:

  1. Help ensure that UW students have a safe and successful academic experience abroad
  2. Raise awareness so that all UW students know about international health and safety resources and services when traveling abroad
  3. Institutionalize long-standing best practices that help ensure the University’s ability to consistently provide efficient and effective, 24/7 support to all students studying abroad

We ask that you take these steps to support this effort and this new policy:

  • Inform students, faculty, and staff about this policy and the importance of working with the Office of Global Affairs before traveling abroad
  • Stay safe together! Let us know how we can work together to raise awareness and advocate for safe and positive academic experiences abroad

Thank you for your time and support. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
