HSERV 556 is a 2-credit course that introduces multidisciplinary perspectives on, potential explanations of, and interventions for health disparities in tobacco use and tobacco-related disease. FAMED 559 is the concurrent 1 or 2-credit version of this course open to medical school students. This course is dually relevant for scholars interested in health disparities in general and for those specifically interested in tobacco-related topics. Call for nominations for the 2020 Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award. Named for the late Graduate School Dean Marsha L. Landolt, the award has recognized excellent faculty mentors annually since 1999.

We are especially interested in generating a diverse group of nominations, including nominations of faculty members who are women, or from underrepresented minority groups, or with disabilities.

Complete information on this year’s nomination procedures and guidelines is available below. Questions about the Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award or nomination procedures may be directed to graddean@uw.edu.

Complete nomination packets must be received by 5 p.m. PST, January 8, 2020; no exceptions to this deadline will be granted.

The Graduate School, with assistance from the President’s Office, sponsors this annual award in order to recognize outstanding mentoring of graduate students by faculty. The relationship between a graduate student and a faculty advisor is one that can have a profound, lifelong influence on both parties. At its best, this mentoring relationship inspires and gives confidence to the student while providing the faculty member with a valued colleague. The Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award allows us to honor those members of the faculty who exemplify excellence in graduate education. A single award, accompanied by $5,000 in discretionary funds that may be used to support the awardee’s scholarly activities, will be given and presented at the annual Awards of Excellence Ceremony in June 2020 in conjunction with other University-wide awards.

King County and Seattle Christmas and free holiday assistance programs.

Across King County Washington there are several Christmas assistance programs. Non-profit organizations run them using donations from the community and also the support of volunteers. A wide variety of gifts and food items may be offered to struggling families, in particular those with children, in an effort to spread the holiday joy.

Some of the charities offer more than just Christmas help. They may also administer Thanksgiving meals or Easter gift baskets. Anyone who may qualify and is interested in getting more information will need to call a center.

Countless families in Seattle are struggling in these challenging times. The free gifts, clothing and meals that are provided around the holidays can make a big difference. It can free up your money for paying other bills and help people have some joy around Christmas and other holidays.

See attached.

As you might remember, the City and LIHI are scheduling the Northlake Tiny House Village for eviction this Monday 12/09, 3 months before their contract with the City is supposed to end and in the middle of Winter. Since Northlake is one of our Outreach sites, and our neighbors, I’m reaching out for 3 urgent asks:

  1. Sign this petition which will be delivered to the Mayor. Deadline to sign is 1pm today: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdL9x3qHYcunMOYx7okzWWh8Uh4YoJ37gyfSbGBJAMMgQtwnQ/viewform
  1. Join me on Monday at 8am at Northlake Village in solidarity with residents if the city tries to come in and physically evict people. *Happy to answer questions about what this day might look like. We are not expecting the city to use force. If you want to join, you can respond to this email or text me so we can all go together. (630)677-9049.
  1. Share this information with your Seattle networks so we can build as much community support around this as possible.

Reminder – applications for the Yale Child Study Center’s Advanced Clinical Social Work Fellowship are due January 5th.  Please feel free to post/distribute the attached announcement as appropriate and direct student questions to Anne Santello at anne.santello@yale.edu
