The Marcy Migdal Fund supports exceptional University of Washington students engaged in activities aimed at enhancing access to education for vulnerable students, either locally or throughout the world, and helping them succeed in their education. The Marcy Migdal Scholarship provides a cash award of $1,000 to two individual recipients each academic year. Both undergraduate and graduate students who will be enrolled in 2020-2021 are eligible.

In an effort to promote sustainable collaboration between Latino communities both domestically and globally as well as academic scholarship at the University of Washington, the Latino Center for Health offers a Student Travel Award Program. The program provides award amounts up to $1000, which covers conference registration and travel-related expenses for UW students.  Priority will be given to graduate students, primary authors and presentation topics that address Latino health issues, but others are encouraged to apply.

The ASUW Office of Government Relations and the U.S. Census Bureau will be hosting an information session about the 2020 Census to let the UW community know about what the Census is, why it is important, and how to make sure that students get counted! Over 10 billion dollars in federal funding is allocated based on Census results which is why it is critical to make an all-campus effort to ensure that the U-District is properly represented, as college students are historically undercounted in the Census.

We are hoping for attendees to be able to walk away being knowledgeable about the 2020 Census and encourage their organizations and communities to participate.

The info session will take place on Tuesday, March 10 in Gowen 301 from 7-8pm. We will have banh mi, spring rolls, and other snacks available for participants!

Dr. David Huh, candidate for the Research Faculty position, will be visiting campus on Tuesday, March 17^th.

David is a clinical and quantitative psychologist and a Research Scientist and Director of the Methods Division at the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute. His research focuses on the evaluation of evidence-based interventions for AIAN and other underrepresented populations and the development of longitudinal statistical methodology for evaluating health and health-related outcomes.

In this colloquium, Dr. Huh will discuss his work to increase the accessibility of more accurate and powerful quantitative approaches and tools for evaluating both single studies as well as innovative methods for leveraging data across multiple studies to evaluate treatments and theoretical models of health.

Dr. Huh’s colloquium will be from 12:30 to 1:30 in room 305. Lunch will be served.

Are you interested in volunteering with an exciting new Interprofessional Mobile Health and Outreach project? We are up and running with an ambitious schedule of twice-a-month outreaches planned through June. We are currently recruiting student volunteers from across the health sciences. Students from social work, medicine, nursing, public health (graduate program only), dentistry, physician assistant, pharmacy and rehabilitation sciences are welcome!

The IPE Center (CHSIE) is coordinating two Saturday outreaches a month alongside community partners.  One is at the Georgetown Tiny House Village, and the second will be at various encampment locations alongside the organization Seattle Homeless Outreach.  In addition, University District Street Medicine (UDSM) has monthly Friday evening mobile health outreaches planned for the University District.

The Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work is accepting submissions for their annual student paper award. As many of you are writing your final papers for the quarter, this may be a good time to consider submitting something that you’ve written recently that you are proud of. In addition to recognition for your good work, it’s also a nice way to share an area of interest with fellow clinical social workers in the field.

Below are the details from the WSSCSW website:

Papers will be reviewed and scored by volunteer WSSCSW readers. The two strongest papers submitted we are offering a 1 year membership to WSSCSW,1 year free entry to all Professional Development events, plus publication of their papers on the WSSCSW website. Winners will be acknowledged at the WSSCSW annual party.

Entries must be directly relevant to clinical social work practice. Your paper or project can (and probably should) be a paper or project you wrote for a class. You can edit for brevity.

Paper should be in double-spaced 12 point font, no more than 10 pages long, and must conform to APA formatting standards.

Volunteer with University District Street Medicine!

UDSM is a student-run, interdisciplinary organization that strives to improve health equity among those experiencing homelessness in Seattle’s University District. We bring together health sciences graduate students with health professionals in our community to care for those experiencing homelessness in the University District by providing health services including basic first aid, vital sign acquisition and resource referral and navigation. Currently, UDSM conducts ten outreaches per month throughout the U District and central Seattle.

Social Work students are an essential part of our teams! We are recruiting volunteers to participate in outreach sessions (time commitment based on your availability) and for leadership positions (3-5 hour per month commitment). We are seeking grad student volunteers for all positions for both spring and summer 2020 and for the 2020-2021 academic year.
