UW PI Jon Froehlich was Interviewed by Seattle Times on Sidewalk Accessibility
Last month, PacTrans PI and UW Associate Professor of Computer Science Engineering, Jon Froehlich, was interviewed by the Seattle Times as part of an article titled, “WA faces an epidemic of inaccessible sidewalks.” The article aptly describes that unless there is network time accessibility, a single location’s accessibility (an apartment complex being sidewalk accessible, for example) is irrelevant. They point out that many places across the state of Washington suffer from a lack of network wide sidewalk accessibility.

PacTrans 2021 Student Conference Recap
In October of this year, the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium hosted its annual Region 10 Student Conference, which attracted more than 40 participants to join in-person at University of Washington’s Seattle campus. For the first time in three years, students from universities across the region were able to meet their peers in person at this great event. This year’s program featured multiple industry talks and sought to encourage out-of-the-box thinking.

PacTrans Co-Hosts NaTMEC 2022 with ITD
PacTrans had the pleasure of partnering with the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to co-host the 2022 National Travel Monitoring Exposition and Conference (NaTMEC) this past summer. The conference provides a wonderful opportunity to meet with federal, state, local transportation professionals as well as industry leaders who have common interest in travel monitoring.

UAF Steel Bridge Team Places 2nd at Nationals
Over the years, PacTrans has been a strong supporter of our consortium partner universities’ student competition teams. This past year, a team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks took second place in the 2022 Student Steel Bridge Competition finals, the best showing for UAF in more than a quarter century.

OSU’s David Hurwitz Discusses Recent Trends in Increased Traffic Crashes on MPR News
Recently, PacTrans Associate Director and OSU Professor of Civil and Construction Engineering, David Hurwitz, took part in a Minnesota Public Radio news segment titled, How can we make Minnesota’s roads safer? Professor Hurwitz was joined by Brian Sorenson, the state traffic engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and Colonel Matt Langer, the chief of the Minnesota State Patrol, to discuss the recent rise in traffic crashes.
