Northeast
Northeastern Washington is characterized by diverse communities, agriculture, national forests, and one of
the largest urban centers in eastern Washington.
The 1.1 million-acre Colville National Forest encompasses much of the area, as do the Colville and Spokane
Indian Reservations. Apples, pears, peaches, and cherries are grown throughout the Okanogan River Valley.
Spokane has witnessed recent growth and expansion that has brought hundreds of new businesses into the
community, particularly manufacturing facilities. Spokane is also home to major medical facilities serving the
inland Northwest.
The Grand Coulee Dam of the Columbia River is one of the largest concrete structures in the world and the
third largest producer of hydro-electric power.
UW Educational Outreach offers K-12 professional development opportunities designed specifically for the
rural teacher in Okanogan County, and each county in the area is served by UW rural medicine training programs.
A number of institutions and organizations in Spokane serve as the hub for educational partnerships and student
outreach programs in Eastern Washington.
