Artist Statement

Ellen (Jing) Xu (b. 1987) grew up in Inner Mongolia of China. She received her MFA in Photomedia from the University of Washington in 2016 and holds a dual degree in Sculpture (with honors) and Law from Xiamen University in China. She has attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Ellen received the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists Scholarship, and was recently a resident artist at the Vermont Studio Center and Wassaic Artist Residency Program.

“Ellen brings an urgency and enormous energy to her work and interactions. Her multivalent installation merges a wide spectrum of attitudes and concerns: sorrow for the loss of her beloved dog Xiao Mao (Cat), a quirky and generous humor, and assertions of ethnic as well as gender identity. Experiencing each unexpected element in the exhibition, we delight in her virtuosity with materials, the freedom of her working process, and the confidence of her original associations and allusions.”
