b"Student Fellowship AwardeesRobert GillisRobert, a Writing Studies major who graduated in spring 2019, was selected for the prestigious Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. He will be an Assistant Lan-guage Teacher in Hitachiota in Ibaraki Prefecture. Ive been living in Washington all my life, andsince I was young, Ive been interested in visiting Japan and in becom-ing a Japanese-to-English translator and English teacher there. My goal is to immerse myself in the culture and language of Japan and become a cultural ambassador be-tween Japan and the U.S. This will be the first time I travel outside of the United U.S.Adn Espino Jr.Adn Espino Jr. (Law & Policy, BA '19) was named a 2019 Mary Gates Leadership Scholar in the spring of 2019. Adn was born and raised in Washington and has felt a passion for his community since high school. Adn has served as UW Tacoma's stu-dent lobbyist to advocate for State Need Grant funding, student loan reform, and in-vestment into UW Tacoma. He was also one of the students who successfully advo-cated for student apartments in the new micro-apartments on Market Street.
