Welcome back to campus for Academic Year 2018-19!

This is our Autumn CSSCR announcement. Below you will find our listing of workshops for the quarter and some new data sources. Do check out our new CSSCR website for updates and for changes in our workshop scheduling! As always, registration is open and free to anyone in the UW community. Please let your colleagues, staff, and students know by sharing this newsletter. Individuals can subscribe to the newsletter here, and our newsletter archive is found here.

Note we do have a new website that makes us look a bit more like the standard UW sites and makes it a bit easier for us to update. If you do have a saved link to us you should insure it is for the new site— http://csscr.washington.edu/

If you plan on using the computer labs for Autumn Quarter or for this coming Winter Quarter make your reservations now! Lab space is filling up; we have some available time still for autumn requests and it is always good to get your next quarter requests in early. You can verify your lab reservations and check for space availability on our online calendar. Give us a call (206-543-8110) or drop us an email at csscr@u.washington.edu. The labs can be reserved by faculty in our member departments. Students and student groups from our member departments are also welcomed to reserve the labs for workshops, experiments, group projects, etc.

ICPSR Data Fair—For your information the 2018 ICPSR Data Fair, “Data: Powered by You” is about to happen; reservations for the webinars are required. This conference is sponsored by ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research) and is virtual, free and open to the public. They explore topics such as data transparency, data activism, sharing data, and more. The Data Fair will feature over 20 webinars hosted by expert presenters and ICPSR’s very own Official and Designated Representatives. Introduction to R using Rstudio

Description:
This class will teach you how to get started with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The course will cover the basic organization of R and RStudio, where to find good help references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is ideal for users who have little or no experience with R.

Introduction to GIS/ArcGIS

Description:
This course will provide students with a broad overview of what geographic information systems (GISs) are and how social scientists can benefit from using them in their research. Students will explore basic GIS concepts through hands-on exercises using ArcGIS, a widely used GIS software package, as well as freely available data sets.

Description:

Introduction to Qualitative Research and ATLAS.ti

Description:
This course provides a brief, practical introduction to working in ATLAS.ti, covering basic terminology and functionality of the program. This will include importing text documents, coding and annotating documents, and exploring relationships through analysis and query tools. Time permitting, we may also briefly discuss best practices for data management. The course assumes no prior use of Atlas-ti.

Data Wrangling in R

Description:

This course will cover some of R’s useful tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to learning Hadley Wickham’s excellent “tidyr” and “dplyr” packages. Attendees are assumed to have basic familiarity with R/Rstudio.

Recent and New Data at CSSCR

  • 2012-2016 ACS 5-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) for Washington State
  • 2012-2016 ACS 5-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) for the US

CSSCR provides complete ACS-SF & ACS-PUMS files in SPSS, STATA, R and SAS formats for Washington State and US. They are accessible through CSSCR’s ACS site. Data specialist, Tina Tian (contact at csscr@uw.edu), can provide help on using ACS estimates and other census data.

CSSCR maintains the UW membership in the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). All members of the UW community have direct access to ICPSR’s data archive of over 9,900 studies. Please contact us if you have questions or need more information about using this resource for accessing data or adding your data to the ICPSR repository. ICPSR new data releases and other news can be found here.

The Center for Social Science Computation and Research (CSSCR) is an interdepartmental computer center in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington. CSSCR provides facilities and consulting support for computing activity related to teaching and research at the University.
