Welcome back to spring and cherry blossoms! 

This is our Spring 2019 CSSCR announcement/newsletter. Below
you will find our listing of workshops for the quarter and some new data
sources.  Do check out our new website http://csscr.washington.edu/ for
updates and for any necessary changes in our workshop scheduling! As always,
registration is open and free to anyone in the UW community. Please let your
colleagues, staff, and students know by sharing this newsletter. Individuals

for this coming Summer Sessions make your reservations now—even for next Fall
Quarter which is currently being planned! You can verify your lab reservations
and check for space availability on our online calendar. Give us

us an email at csscr@u.washington.edu. The
labs can be reserved by faculty in our member
departments
. Students and student groups from our member
departments are also welcomed to reserve the labs for workshops, experiments,
group projects, and other academic events.

Introduction to R using Rstudio

Description:
This class will teach you how to get started
with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The
course will cover the basic organization of R and RStudio, where to find good
help references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is ideal for
users who have little or no experience with R.

Introduction to GIS/ArcGIS

Description:
This course will provide students with a broad overview of what geographic
information systems (GISs) are and how social scientists can benefit from using
them in their research. Students will explore basic GIS concepts through
hands-on exercises using ArcGIS, a widely used GIS software package, as well as
freely available data sets.

Introduction to Qualitative Research and ATLAS.ti

Description:
This course provides a brief, practical introduction to working in ATLAS.ti,
covering basic terminology and functionality of the program. This will include
importing text documents, coding and annotating documents, and exploring
relationships through analysis and query tools. Time permitting, we may also
briefly discuss best practices for data management. The course assumes no prior
use of Atlas-ti.

Introduction to SPSS

Description:
This courses introduces the SPSS statistical package including reading in
datafiles as well as basic data management and introductory statistical
procedures. Additional topics include computing and recoding variables and
selecting and filtering cases.

Data Wrangling in R

Description:

This course will cover some of R’s useful
tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to
learning Hadley Wickham’s excellent “tidyr” and “dplyr”
packages. Attendees are assumed to have basic familiarity with R/Rstudio.

Graphics in R

Description:
This course introduces students to ways of producing effect graphs in R.  Topics covered will include basic plotting
functions (e.g. histograms, scatter plots), production of multi-panel graphs,
and various means of exporting graphs to other presentation packages.

ICPSR Summer Program and Workshop announcements:

ICPSR Summer Program:  Founded in 1963, the ICPSR Summer Program offers rigorous,
hands-on training in statistics, quantitative methods, and data analysis for
students and researchers of all skill levels and backgrounds. Participants in
the ICPSR Summer Program learn how to understand data and gain valuable
research skills that help them to advance their education and careers.

From May through August
2019, the ICPSR Summer Program will offer more than 80 courses in Ann Arbor,
Michigan and other cities around the world. Registration is now open for all
courses.

PSID Data User Training Workshop:  The ICPSR Summer Program would like to announce the following
workshop, sponsored by the Panel Study of Income Dynamics:

June 10-14, 2019,
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

This five-day workshop
will orient participants to the content and structure of the Panel Study of
Income Dynamics, its special topics modules, and the PSID Child Development
Supplement and PSID Transition into Adulthood Supplement. The workshop pairs
morning instructional sessions led by experienced PSID researchers and staff
with afternoon guided lab sessions in which users construct their own analytic
data files.

The workshop is open to
predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, college and university faculty, and
professional researchers. Admitted predoctoral students and postdoctoral
fellows may request to be considered for a stipend to help with travel and
housing costs. All applications received by April 12 will be given priority for
enrollment.

CSSCR provides complete ACS-SF & ACS-PUMS
files in SPSS, STATA, R and SAS formats for Washington State and US. They are
accessible through CSSCR’s ACS site. Data specialist, Tina Tian (contact at
csscr@uw.edu), can provide help on using ACS estimates and other census data.

CSSCR maintains the UW membership in the
Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). All
members of the UW community have direct access to ICPSR’s data archive of over
9,900 studies. Please contact us if you have questions or need more information
about using this resource for accessing data or adding your data to the ICPSR
repository. ICPSR new data releases and other news can be found here.


The Center for Social Science Computation and Research (CSSCR)
is an interdepartmental computer center in the College of Arts and Sciences at
the University of Washington. CSSCR provides facilities and consulting support
for computing activity related to teaching and research at the University.
