CSSCR Newsletter Spring 2021

From the Director:

CSSCR’s key services remain online for Spring quarter. Our “drop in” consulting services can simply be accessed by sending a request to csscr@uw.edu with a brief description of your question/problem; this allows us to route you to the most appropriate consultant on duty. Consultants are on duty from 8AM to 9PM M-Th and 8AM to 5PM on Friday; we are closed weekends and on all university holidays. Requests for data services, other services, and general questions can also be addressed at csscr@uw.edu. We are here to help with your students, your research, your courses!

Introduction to R using R Studio

Description:   This workshop will teach you how to get started with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The workshop will cover the basic organization of R and RStudio, where to find good help references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is ideal for users who have little or no experience with R.

Description:   This is an introductory workshop demonstrating the use of Tableau for analyses and visualization of data. Emphasis will be on using Tableau for mapping/displaying geographic based data. No prior knowledge of Tableau is assumed.

Data Wrangling in R

Description:   This workshop will cover some of R’s useful tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to learning Hadley Wickham’s excellent “tidyr” and “dplyr” packages. Attendees are assumed to have basic familiarity with R/Rstudio.

Introduction to Qualitative Analysis using ATLAS.ti

Description:   This workshop provides a brief, practical introduction to working in ATLAS.ti, covering basic terminology and functionality of the program. This will include importing text documents, coding and annotating documents, and exploring relationships through analysis and query tools. The course assumes no familiarity with Atlas.ti

Graphics in Stata

Description:   This workshop is designed to introduce you to the basics of creating and editing graphs in Stata; the workshop illustrates simple descriptive graphs (e.g. boxplots), common practices for bivariate and time-series displays, and standard regression fit plots. Some base introductory knowledge of Stata is assumed.

Basic Graphics in R

Description:   This CSCCR workshop introduces students to ways of producing effect graphs in R.  Topics covered will include basic plotting functions (e.g. histograms, scatter plots), production of multi-panel graphs, and various means of exporting graphs to other presentation packages.

ICPSR access at CSSCR and ICPSR Summer Programs

CSSCR maintains the UW membership in the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). All members of the UW community have direct access to ICPSR’s data archive of over 9,900 studies. Please contact us if you have questions or need more information about using this resource for accessing data or adding your data to the ICPSR repository. ICPSR new data releases and other news can be found here.

Also ICPSR at U. of Michigan has summer workshops and trainings that are available through our membership; their are fees but also scholarships at ICPSR are available. The ICPSR Summer Program webpage is at: https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/sumprog/.
