CSSCR Newsletter Summer 2025

Summer quarter has arrived, and CSSCR is here to serve you. Our facilities are open weekdays from 9AM to 5PM for most of the summer. We will be closed a few times for holidays (June 19th and July 4th), and consulting will be closed on June 20th and for two weeks from August 25 through September 5.

Drop-in consulting services are available in-person (Savery 119) during these hours.  If you want to work with a consultant remotely, send a note to CSSCR@uw.edu during our daytime hours along with a brief description of what you need. A consultant will then get in touch with you.

This summer, we are offering a set of workshops that provide introductions to a variety of statistical programs or data analysis topics.    All we ask is that you register for the in-person workshops in advance.  Most of the workshops are scheduled for 1.5 hours with the first hour giving the key content and the last half-hour allowing for follow-up questions and some 1:1 discussion.

Two-day online workshop highlighting tobacco use data—application deadline June 30

Online only: Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Workshop: Making Nationally Representative Inferences from PATH. August 13-14.

“The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study Data User Workshop: Making Nationally Representative Inferences from the PATH Study Data”

Date: August 13-14, 2025

The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study is a collaboration between the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The PATH Study is a household-based, nationally representative, longitudinal cohort study of approximately 46,000 adults and youth (ages 12-17) in the United States. The PATH Study was launched in 2011 to inform the FDA’s regulatory activities under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which was signed into law in 2009.

This workshop will utilize hands-on examples to better understand the PATH Study sample design and weighting. Specifically, attendees will gain a better understanding of how to conduct longitudinal analyses to estimate change over time, as well as pseudo-cross-sectional analyses to estimate prevalence.

Basics of STATA

Description: This workshop will teach you how to get started using the statistical package Stata. The workshop will cover a) reading in data files from different sources, b) basic data manipulation, and c) some basic common statistical procedures. No previous Stata experience required.

Flow Maps in GIS: Visualizing Migration, Trade, and Networks – Part Two

Description: Flow maps are powerful tools for representing migration patterns, trade and shipping routes, disease spread, data and communication networks, and other measurable flows between locations. This workshop will build on the previous class, focusing on the principles and aesthetics of flow map visualization. We’ll continue using QGIS for beginners and ArcGIS for advanced users.

Introduction to Python

Description:  This introductory workshop is designed to introduce you to basic Python commands, including reading in datasets, basic data manipulation, and common statistical tests and procedures. This will also cover common Python IDEs and comparisons to other popular programming languages such as Stata and R. This class will be ideal for users who have little to no experience with Python.

Data Wrangling in R

Description:  This workshop will cover some of R’s useful tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to learning Hadley Wickham’s excellent “tidyr” and “dplyr” packages. Attendees are assumed to have basic familiarity with R/RStudio.

Efficient R Programming: Working with Many Columns, Functions, and Models

Description: A good rule of thumb in data wrangling and programming is: if you find yourself copying and pasting a block of code more than twice, it’s time to stop and think about a more efficient approach. This course will introduce functional programming and other techniques to reduce redundancy and enhance the computational efficiency of your R code. We will cover practical skills frequently used in data projects, such as manipulating multiple columns, writing anonymous functions, using map(), nesting dataframes within tibbles, and running multiple regressions and comparing them results simultaneously. Attendees are expected to have basic familiarity with data wrangling using dplyr in R.

Introduction to Thematic Analysis in Atlas.ti

Description: This workshop provides a brief, practical introduction to working in ATLAS.ti, by marrying the functionality of the program with the fundamentals of the qualitative methodology. This will include importing text documents, creating codes, memos and comments, and exploring thematic relationships through analysis. The course assumes no familiarity with Atlas.ti
