ACS 1-Year Estimates
Every year the ACS produces single-year estimates for geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more, with an annual sample size of about 3 million addresses. There are about 6,500 geographic areas that met the 65,000 or more population threshold for 1-year estimates. The geographic areas in 1-year estimates include:
- All 2000 PUMAs (Public Use Microdata Areas)
- School districts
- States, counties, and places, including Census Designated Places (CDPs)
- Congressional districts
- Metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas.
The 2005 ACS doesn’t include population in Group Quarter (GQ), but they are included in 2006 ACS and will be in subsequent years
Group Quarter (GQ) is a living quarter in which unrelated people live or stay other than the usual house, apartment, or mobile home, etc. nursing homes, hospitals, prison wards, college dormitories, military barracks and shelters.
2005 ACS Base Tables for WA
2005 ACS base tables are the first substantial set of data tables ever to appear based on the ACS. Summaries are for geographic areas of at least 65,000 population. The group quarter segment of the population was not covered in the 2005 survey, so all figures here summarize just the household population. There are no moving averages here, just tables based on a single year of surveys. These data were being released in “waves” during the summer and fall of 2006. Base tables were grouped in 4 waves as they were being released in different schedules: Wave1 – Demographic & Social Characteristics; Wave2 – Economic Characteristics; Waves3 – Housing Characteristics; Wave4 – Selected Population Profiles for Race, Ethnic, & Ancestry Groups. There two types of base table provide here, B table and C table; a C table is a collapsed version of a B table with the corresponding table-code.
2005 ACS PUMS for WA
The 2005 public use microdata sample (PUMS) is a subset of the 2005 American Community Survey (ACS) and Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) samples. Note that microdata records in this sample do not contain names, addresses, or any information that can identify a specific housing unit, or person. The smallest geographic unit that is identified is the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA).
For 2005, the ACS selected a sample in all counties across the nation, including all municipios in Puerto Rico. The population estimates of the 2005ACS data were limited to the household population and exclude the population living in Group Quarters, etc. nursing homes, hospitals, prison wards, college dormitories, military barracks and shelters.The 2005 PUMS data contain 1,259,653 housing unit records and 2,913,796 person records, which is many more records than in previous years.
2006 ACS summary files for WA
The 2006 ACS Summary File includes all detailed tables for all geographies published by the 2006 ACS, which contains a total of 1261 unique detailed tables (a.k.a. “base tables” with the letter “B”); of these tables, ID’s beginning with the letter “C” are collapsed versions of tables (i.e. these tables have fewer detailed cells). The 2006 ACS-SF includes the Group Quarters (GQ) population for the first time.
The 2006 ACS-Summary File posted on our website only contains the estimate data, the margins of error data & standard errors data were not included here. The ACS-Summary File’s FTP server of Census Bureau (https://www2.census.gov/) provides all 3 types of format data in ASCII files.

2006 ACS PUMS for WA
The 2005 public use microdata sample (PUMS) is a subset of the 2006 American Community Survey (ACS) and Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) samples. Note that microdata records in this sample do not contain names, addresses, or any information that can identify a specific housing unit, GQ or person. The smallest geographic unit that is identified is the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA).
For 2006, the ACS selected a sample of housing units (HUs) and Group Quarters (GQs) in all counties across the nation, and all municipios in Puerto Rico. The population sample is defined as all persons living in households selected in the housing unit sample, plus the persons selected from the GQ sample. The 2006 PUMS data contain 1,277,561 housing unit records and 2,923,336 person records from households and 81,151 person records from GQs
2007 ACS summary files for WA
The 2007 ACS Summary File includes all detailed tables for all geographies published by the 2007 ACS, which contains a total of 1369 unique detailed tables (a.k.a. “base tables”). Of these tables, ID’s beginning with the letter “C” are collapsed versions of tables (i.e. these tables have fewer detailed cells). These detailed tables include U.S. population and housing characteristics for the housing unit population and the Group Quarters (GQ) population. Puerto Rico is excluded here
Files posted on this website include three types of data, the estimate data, the margins of error data and the standard error data that are available in SAS, SPSS & STATA formats. These data files contain all the tables but at a certain level of geography, eg. e20071wa_county.sas7bdat is a estimate data at county level. Please read the “READ ME” document on how to use the data files, eg. extracting variables from a complete data file.
To obtain ACS-SF data by variables in SAS format is also available on the Missouri Census Data Center website.
2007 ACS PUMS for WA
The 2007 public use microdata sample (PUMS) is a subset of the 2007 American Community Survey (ACS) and Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) samples. Note that microdata records in this sample do not contain names, addresses, or any information that can identify a specific housing unit, GQ or person. The smallest geographic unit that is identified is the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA).
Like the 2006 PUMS, the 2007 PUMS contains a sample of the group quarters (GQ) population which were not included in the 2005 PUMS. For 2007, the population sample is defined as all persons living in households selected in the housing unit sample, plus the persons selected from the GQ sample. The 2007 PUMS data contain 1,293,393 housing unit records and 2,946,342 person records from households and 81,679 person records from GQs.
2008 ACS 1-Year Summary files for WA
This WA 2008 ACS 1-Year Summary File includes all detailed tables for all geographies published by the 2008 ACS, which contains a total of 1374 unique detailed tables (a.k.a. “base tables”). Of these tables, ID’s beginning with the letter “C” are collapsed versions of tables (i.e. these tables have fewer detailed cells). These detailed tables include U.S. population and housing characteristics for the housing unit population and the Group Quarters (GQ) population. Puerto Rico is excluded here.

The 2008 1-Year public use microdata sample (PUMS) is a subset of the 2008 ACS and Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) samples. Note that microdata records in this sample do not contain names, addresses, or any information that can identify a specific housing unit, GQ or person. The smallest geographic unit that is identified is the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA).
The 2008 1-Year PUMS is a sample of all persons living in households selected in the housing unit sample, plus the persons selected from the GQ sample. The 2008 PUMS data contain 1,304,997 housing unit records and 2,950,207 person records from households and 82,957 person records from GQs.

2020 ACS 1-Year Experimental Data Tables
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the ability to reach people and limited their ability to participate in the 2020 ACS. Therefore, instead of providing the standard 1-year data products/1-year Summary Files, the Census Bureau released experimental estimates from the 1-year data, 2020 ACS 1-Year Experimental Data Tables, which only includes a limited number of data tables for the nation, states, and the District of Columbia.
The 2020 ACS 1-year experimental tables use an experimental estimation methodology and should not be compared with other ACS data. The Census Bureau urges data users to exercise caution when using the 2020 experimental data and to determine whether the data are suitable for their particular use. Note: Due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Census Bureau did not release its standard 2020 ACS 1-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) data but with experimental weights and replicate weights and are only available for the nation, regions, divisions, states, and Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs).
