Christina Kam, an undergraduate at Pomona College on the pre-health track, is interning at the Memory Hub to develop her special interest in compassionate dementia care.
“I am interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, and one aspect that is often overlooked is the importance of care, connection, and day-to-day support for individuals and their families,” says Christina. “The Memory Hub prioritizes inclusion and quality of life for people living with memory loss. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to understand better what compassionate, community-centered care looks like in practice, which will make me a more thoughtful and well-rounded future healthcare provider.”
Christina discovered the Memory Hub after her grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2019. Her mother attended a talk at the Memory Hub to learn about effective ways to care for someone with dementia.
“When I learned about the Memory Hub, I wanted to support their mission and participate,” she says. “I loved the welcoming and engaging environment that the Memory Hub fosters.” Christina began volunteering at the Memory Hub's Alzheimer's Cafés while still in high school.
At the Memory Hub, Christina facilitates karaoke and tai chi with the Chinese Healthy Aging Program offered by Kin-On. “I appreciate this program because it allows me to connect with the elderly Chinese community and practice my Mandarin. “This program always brightens my day because the participants are always enthusiastic and caring.”
Christina is looking forward to building deeper connections with participants in the Chinese Healthy Aging programs and the Elderwise Day program, as well as giving a Dementia Friends talk to help raise awareness and understanding about memory loss.
“My favorite part of being at the Memory Hub might seem simple, but it means a lot to me. I enjoy welcoming people. Whether it's fellow staff members, individuals living with memory loss, or their care partners, I find joy in creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere.”
Outside of work and school, Christina enjoys running, and she hopes to complete a half-marathon this summer. She also likes getting creative through digital art, scrapbooking, and nail art.
