Key Research, Technical Assistance, and Education Strengths
- Graduate degrees (M.S. and M.N.R) in Natural Resource Sciences with programs in five areas that include ecophysiology and intensive culture of forest trees, conservation biology and ecological restoration, habitat, nutritional and population ecology of terrestrial wildlife, rangeland ecology and management, social and economic dimensions of natural resources. Ph.D. degrees are offered through the interdepartmental program in Environmental Sciences in each of the five program areas.
- Expertise exists in aquatic ecology and limnology, forest ecology and management, rangeland ecology and management, watershed science and management, and wildlife ecology and management.
- Departmental research facilities include eight faculty research laboratories dedicated to aquatic ecology and limnology, wildlife foraging ecology, wildlife nutritional ecology, avian ecology, habitat/population ecology, tree ecophysiology, rangeland plant ecology, and natural resource social science. Extension/outreach facilities focus on forestland, rangeland, watershed (upland/riparian), and wildlife systems. Extension/outreach centers include WSU-Puyallup Research and Extension Center, E.H. Steffen Center (Pullman), Bear Research/Education/Conservation Center (Pullman), Small Mammal Research Facility (Pullman), Palouse-Kramer Natural Area, Wildlife Habitat Nutrition Laboratory (Pullman), and the Colockum Multiple Use Unit (Wenatchee).
- Collaborating research programs and facilities include the Washington Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Northwest Watershed Research Center, UI College of Natural Resources, USDA Forest Science Laboratory of the Rocky Mountain Research Station (laboratories in Logan, Utah; Moscow, Idaho; Reno, Nevada; and Wenatchee, Washington), UW College of Forest Resources, WSU Water Research Center, and others.
- Outreach/extension and technical assistance interactions include the Rocky Mountain CESU, Pacific Northwest CESU, Alliance for Natural Resource Research, Education and Management in the Northern Rockies, Natural Resources Institute, Rural Technology Initiative, Farm Forestry, CROP, and Watershed Regions and Councils.
