Description: One of the most effective mini-units in the UW’s STARTALK Student Program for Russian heritage speakers has been the Interviews with Professionals. The unit consists of three lessons: Preparing for the Interview, Conducting the Interview, and Writing Formal Thank-you Letters. Over the past five years, the Russian heritage students have had the opportunity to hear from and interact with Russian-speaking professionals from Microsoft, Boeing, Alaska Airlines, the University of Washington Slavic and Mathematics Departments, Philips, and many others. The UW STARTALK team would like to share these lesson plans with other teachers who work with heritage and immersion students middle to high school age, with proficiency at the Intermediate to Advanced levels. During the three-hour workshop, Dr. Svetlana Abramova will share what you need to do to engage the students and prepare them to be successful in communicating in a formal, professional style. Members of the UW Language Immersion Committee will be available to help identify professionals who speak the language to interview. Participants will have access to the Language Learning Center lab to work on tailoring the lesson plans to meet the needs of their language and their students so that when they leave, they’ll be ready to invite their guests and teach their class.
