The Washington State Legislative Intern Program!

The Washington State Legislative Intern Program! This is a paid, for-credit internship opportunity for college students of any major to work as staff at the Capitol during the Legislative Session (January through March or April). We hire around 70 students each year from colleges around the state each year.  Political experience is not necessary: we’re always looking for students from diverse backgrounds who are active leaders, engaged in campus communities, and excited to learn about government and gain practical job skills.

The 2017 internship will run from January 3, 2018, through March 8, 2018.  Applications are open now and are due on October 18, 2016. Students must be enrolled juniors or seniors, in good academic standing, and receiving academic credit for the internship.  We welcome students of all majors and provide amazing opportunities for networking, shadowing, and real-world experience in a wide variety of fields, from state government and politics to business, law, criminal justice, communications, social work, environmental policy, education, and public health.

We will be on campus April 24 and 25. Location and times for info sessions can be found on our website here.

More information about the Legislative Internship Program is available on our website at www.leg.wa.gov/internships.  We’re also on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and students are welcome to contact us or your school’s campus contact person (Mark Weitzenkamp) any time with questions.

Disrupting the System – the Valve-turner Direct Action panel
Wednesday April 12th, 5:30 – 8pm
UW “wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ” Intellectual House
Free
Sponsored by the UW Comparative History of Ideas (CHID) Program with co-sponsors American Indian Studies and the Ethnic Cultural Center

Come hear why disrupting the status quo is imperative to our civilization’s survival and why civil disobedience is the most powerful force available to citizens now that all legal, incremental and reasonable efforts at averting climate catastrophe have been exhausted.

5 climate organizers turned emergency shut-off valves on all 5 pipelines that carry tar sands oil into the United States. This was an unprecedented act of direct action that sh…ut down 15% of US crude oil imports for nearly a day, October 11th, 2016.

Now the “Valve-turners” face Felony charges in four states and sentences up to 51 years in prison. Over the coming months they will confront the legal system with the questions of fairness, risk, and equity as they argue the necessity of their action in courts across four states.

Through creative conflict we can force the public to wake, think, and challenge corrupt authority. Every life on earth depends on our willingness to do the right thing – Right Now
