Both MLQ and Duke University Press understand first-hand the importance of intellectual property for scholars. The contract that authors sign with MLQ/Duke gives the widest breadth possible for republication rights. That is, authors have full authority to reprint any essay in the author's own work without a republication fee. The following sentence from the publication agreement, signed after a work has been accepted, details this provision:

In case of republication, notice of previous publication in Modern Language Quarterly, and that it is reprinted by permission of the Publisher, must be given.

The press charges a fee if the essay is reprinted in someone else's collection. If you have any questions about reprinting, including specific costs, contact Duke's permissions representative at

Further information on rights and permissions is available on the Duke UP permissions page.
