We’re looking forward to returning to campus for in-person instruction and activities this autumn, and in order to do so safely, the UW is requiring all students and employees to be vaccinated. The Health Care Authority is hiring for a Behavioral Health Criminal Justice Manager in the Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery.

 

This position develops, administers, implements, and manages the Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR) substance use disorder (SUD) statewide treatment program for Washington State residents involved in the criminal justice system. The Behavioral Health Criminal Justice Manager develops strong working relationships with providers, state agencies, and other stakeholders in ensuring proper treatment is being provided to those receiving services across the state. If you are an organized program manager with strong relationship-building and communication skills who is passionate about having a direct impact on Washington residents receiving treatment in the criminal justice system, then this might be the position for you.

New Fringe Benefit Rates Now Available
FY22 fringe benefit rates are now available. Please use these updated rates on multi-year sponsored program proposal budgets to best reflect anticipated costs. If you submitted a proposal using previously published or preliminary rates for budget years FY22 and behond, upon award, you may re-budget as necessary to account for these changes.

As public health measures continue to improve and we move towards reopening the State and the UW, researchers should be looking ahead to the time when capacity constraints and other restrictions are relaxed.  When state and University restrictions are relaxed, you will need to revise your COVID-19 Return to In-person Research Plans according to the new guidelines and have the new plan approved as per the original process. Here are some steps you can take to get prepared:

  1. Get vaccinated and encourage other in your research group to do so if they are able.
  2. Start thinking about how you will manage and monitor a safe and positive working environment based on the vaccination status of your research teams.

Start preparing your research teams who are not currently working onsite for a return to in person work. Please work with your unit to follow their process for returning to work. Read more

Natasha Hakimali Merchant, PhD, Assistant Professor of Multicultural & Social Studies Education, will be conducting a qualitative research study in the Greater Puget Sound area, following 6-8 secondary social studies teachers as they teach lesson about Islam.

She is looking to recruit a graduate student who could assist me with conducting observations and capturing field notes and recordings of class.

Compensation:

-$22/hour

-180 hours over the academic year (roughly 60 hours a quarter)

-You cannot hold any other part-time appointment with UW

Exploring and Analyzing Monitoring the Future Data: A Primer

The Monitoring the Future (MTF) project (http://monitoringthefuture.org/) is a long-term epidemiologic and etiologic study of substance use among the nation’s youth and adults. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse since 1975, the MTF project collects data annually from nationally representative samples of adolescents from 8th-12 grade. This four-day workshop will cover the content of MTF public release and restricted-use data, study documentation, data management and analysis planning, and, as time and interest allow, a variety of analytic techniques appropriate for data derived from a complex sample design.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health disparities experienced by traditionally oppressed groups including older adults, low-wage workers and those living in poverty, and people with underlying health conditions. Public policies and practices that intentionally or unintentionally favor positive outcomes for certain groups over others violate human rights and must be rectified. The co-editors of the Journal of Human Rights and Social Work expect that these human rights violations will not pass with the first wave of the disease, but will rather continue to grow and/or come to light. As a result, rather than a one-time special issue of the journal, we invite authors to contribute relevant articles on a rolling basis for peer review.

Summer Meals Volunteers Needed Across King County
United Way of King County is looking for volunteers who can commit to volunteering weekly for seven weeks driving and delivering school lunches to children living at High Point, Rainier Vista, and New Holly. As a volunteer, you will report to your meal site once a week for seven weeks. There, you will pick up meals from your site address, drive the meals to families in the community, and deliver the meals to doorsteps through no-contact delivery. United Way of King County will provide PPE (gloves and masks) for all volunteers, provide on-site training and guidance while practicing social distancing at all times.Weekly volunteers are needed at the following sites:

Dear Friends,

 

I write to share the news that our much beloved colleague, Dr. Tracy Harachi, will be retiring at the end of this academic year. Tracy has insisted that there be no retirement send-off or any remarks made at the School’s end-of-year recognition event. I will therefore take this opportunity to thank Tracy for being such a vital part of the SSW community for over three decades, to express our profound sadness at her departure, and to share how deeply we admire and respect her and the remarkable work she has done. Tracy’s retirement will be deeply felt—but we are incredibly fortunate that she will return to the School next year at 10% time to continue one essential piece of work.  My deepest gratitude to Emiko Tajima and Stan DeMello, who researched and helped to compose this message of celebration and thanks.

 

First, a little bit about Tracy’s long-standing connection to the UW School of Social Work. After receiving her BA from the UW, Tracy went on to earn her MSW and PhD from the School of Social Work. She has been a faculty member for close to 30 years. In addition to her years of teaching in the BASW and MSW Programs, Tracy has led study abroad courses and supervised global and local field learning opportunities. She has served as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health since 2009. At the SSW, Tracy has been a champion for students, especially those who are first generation, from underrepresented minority groups, and those who have come to the UW from less resourced countries. She brings to her work an unswerving commitment to global justice and critical experience in global settings. Tracy has served as the faculty advisor for a majority of the international students in our MSW program, many who have limited resources and often feel isolated. In that role she has offered mentorship and facilitated connections among students so they form enduring peer support networks. Her impact with students has been significant and long-lasting.

 

As a prevention science researcher, Tracy’s scholarship has centered on youth development and community practice, with a focus on immigrant and refugee groups. Her scholarship has advanced prevention work to support child and family well-being, including school- and community-based interventions. Active in the Society for Prevention Research (SPR), Tracy was instrumental in creating and overseeing an internship program to train and mentor students from under-represented groups in prevention science research and help increase the diversity of the prevention science field. In 2005, Tracy’s initiative and work in this area was recognized by SPR with the Community, Culture, and Prevention Science Award, and again in 2006 with SPR’s Friend of Early Career Preventionist Network Award. With an enduring commitment to Cambodia, Tracy has also been active as a scholar and community advocate to support individuals subject to criminal deportation, especially in the Cambodian American community. In 2011, Tracy was recognized with the prestigious University of Washington Outstanding Public Service Award. In 2019, Tracy received the SSW’s MLK Jr. Award for Community Service.

Ideal candidates have work and/or lived experience with community-based organizations, BIPOC communities, or social justice movements and a deep interest in facilitating undergraduate student learning. What is it?

  • An interdisciplinary educational and training program focusing on increasing the diverse, culturally competent healthcare workforce that specializes in rural and underserved areas.
  • AHEC Scholars is a nationwide elective certificate program existing in 85% of the nation, through state AHEC programs.
  • It provides you with skills and experiences to better prepare you for work in these areas.
  • It especially seeks to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, rural areas, and racial/ethnic groups that are inadequately represented in health care (but that is not a stipulation for acceptance).
  • The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) will identify AHEC Scholar students as having special training and experience with rural and underserved communities.

 

What is the structure?

  • This is a two-year inter-professional program in which you would learn about other disciplines and develop team-based learning and skills that you can take into practice.
  • You can take the courses for UW elective credit if you are a UW student or no credit/no cost.

    • This past year, 132 students across Washington and Idaho were enrolled in the program.

“Decolonizing Mental Health” is part of a multi-platform initiative from GBH that includes the four-hour “Mysteries of Mental Illness” docuseries (premiering nationwide on PBS on June 22 & 23) tracing the evolution of the complex topic of mental health from its earliest days to present times.

What: A health fair where we hope to bring diabetes education and services directly to the King County Latinx community. During this event we will provide:  

  • A1C point of care testing.  
  • Chronic disease education on diabetes and hypertension.  
  • Education on exercise and physical therapy related to diabetes.  
  • Healthy eating education from UW dietary staff volunteers, and information on local healthy food stores and farmers’ markets.  
  • COVID-19 vaccinations.  
  • We also plan on having a health-centered chef that will be preparing some yummy nutritional food, and a Zumba instructor giving everyone in the community some tips on how to burn a few calories and have fun while doing it!

Interested folks can sign up for one shift (9:30am-12:30pm or 12:30-3:30pm) or for the entire day (9:30am-3:00pm). After signing up we will assign volunteers to specific duties and give out more information on what they will be doing that day.

Shelter Advocate

WHEEL (Women’s Housing Equality Enhancement League) Shelters

$17 per hour

WHEEL (www.wheelforwomen.org) is a dynamic, grassroots organizing effort of homeless/formerly homeless women. We facilitate two loving, 24-hour, low-barrier shelters women on First Hill. We’re looking for level-headed, kind-hearted, reliable strong women to staff our shelters, and perhaps do fill-in shifts (day, evening, overnight).

Most Urgent Need: Day Shift and On-Call Staff; some overnight shifts are also available.

Duties:  Intakes and welcoming women, managing referrals, keeping the peace, set-up, meal service, light cleaning, and informal resource-sharing.  We work cooperatively with our host site and other space users to ensure that the building and its users are not adversely impacted by the shelter program.

Skills: Reliability, patience, communication and conflict mediation skills, and commitment to teamwork. Previous experience with homeless/low-income service work is very helpful, but not required.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $17 per hour; medical benefits after 3 months for those working full-time

  • How you’d like your name to appear in the event
  • Quote/Message (no more than 200 characters)
  • Recording of your name to help reader with pronunciation (optional)
  • Submit everything here by May 20th

Ways to get your processional photo:

  • The Registration/Order form hosted by the Office of Commencement which includes ordering of cap and gown (and other regalia items) is now closed. If you still want to take photos in your cap & gown and you are able to come to campus tomorrow, we still have some slots for the Photo Booth. Please check this link for available timeslots.
  • There is also a cap and gown filter you can access Please select your degree for the appropriate regalia and upload a photo of yourself. You will be able to adjust/scale your photo to fit the filter. Please remember to save your photo so that you can submit it to our google form, above.

Graduating students do not need to RSVP for the SSW Graduation Celebration as you are all automatically included in our event.
