NIH Annual Snapshots
NIH recently published their annual metrics showing the cumulative investigator rate (awardees vs. applicants across mechanisms) and success rates. These, along with the NIH Data Book, can help researchers track summary statistics on grants and contracts and likelihood of success for applications.

UWSOM is excited to announce a program called Mobile Health Outreach (MHO), an interprofessional service-learning project that will bring together volunteers from various health sciences programs at the UW to provide free medical and social services to underserved communities, with the support and collaboration of Harborview Medical Center (affiliated with the University of Washington and King County). In its pilot phase, the MHO program will partner with the Low-Income Housing Institute to provide mobile-van based services to uninsured/underinsured community members living in tiny house villages in the Seattle area.

Interprofessional service-learning and meaningful student leadership are at the heart of the MHO project. We are looking for 2-3 health sciences students to join our MHO steering committee as we proceed with planning for this project, with the goal of launching our outreach work by fall 2022. We hope to find student leaders whose experience, training and expertise will complement and diversify our team. Applications are due no later than June 10;  – LINK TO APPLICATION

Please note, we are looking for a 6 to 12-month commitment in order to successfully plan and launch the MHO project. Because previously scheduled meetings are a cornerstone of this planning work, we ask students to apply for this role only if they are generally available to meet from 12-1 pm on Fridays. We anticipate this volunteer role to require 2-4 hours / week on average.

Roles and responsibilities:

  1. Serve as full members of the MHO steering committee
  2. Participate in MHO steering committee meetings, generally 12-1pm on Fridays
  3. In collaboration with other members of the steering committee, develop and launch multiple aspects of the MHO pilot, including,
    • Community partnership development
    • Listening sessions/ understanding community members’ circumstances and needs
    • Establishing/implementing standards for interprofessional education, with the support of CHSIE
    • Developing student leadership and volunteer structure and scheduling
    • Preceptor recruitment and scheduling
  4. Student steering committee members may choose to continue involvement (including, for example, leadership of week-to-week operations of the clinic) once the MHO project is well-established; however, this is not a requirement. The main role of the steering committee student leads will be to help develop and launch the pilot.
  5. Maintain the highest standards of professionalism, respect, and communication with other team members, volunteers, community partners and clients.

Qualifications:

  1. UW health sciences student who will be enrolled for the period of July-December 2022, ideally beyond
  2. Passion for service and commitment to addressing health and social disparities
  3. Interest/ experience in interprofessional education and collaboration
  4. Demonstrated excellence in teamwork and communication skills
  5. Volunteer experience, ideally in an outreach or community setting

We are so excited to be at this stage of planning for the MHO project and are eager to bring student leaders on board! We believe this is a unique opportunity to help plan and implement an interprofessional outreach project that will provide and connect vulnerable people in our community to needed health and social services.

SOCIAL WORK – THE REVOLUTION OF PROFESSIONAL ROLES

May 26, 2022

6.00 pm (EEST, UTC/GMT +3)

Online, Broadcasted from Lviv, Ukraine

Ukrainian Catholic University

Study Program in Social Work

Social Work Students International Meetup (SWSIM) is an attempt to get acquainted with current developments in scientific and practical social work, research, and projects implemented by students, a new generation of social work professionals.

SWSIM has been implemented as Students Coworking in 2018, 2019 at the state level in Lviv, Ukraine at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). In 2021 we decided to give it a try and organized an international e-conference, where more than 50 participants from 10 countries of 3 continents shared experiences and discovered new ideas. Let’s see if we can exceed it this year.

Concept of the event:

Our main goal is to create a communication platform where students from all around the world can share their hands-on experience as well as scientific papers. Everything that is related to social work is welcomed in our midst.

Main objectives of SWSIM 2022:

  • to maintain the international students` discussion in an area of social work and  to develop bonds among students from around the world;
  • to give students an opportunity to exchange their researches’, projects’, and practice results;
  • to develop a decision making based on values, professional norms, and research results;
  • to show potential and enhance the perspectives of social work;
  • to empower tomorrow’s leaders of the social sphere.

Participants:

Undergraduate, Graduate, Postgraduate Students of Social Work, related educational programs all over the World (russian and belarussian students are not welcome because of the war of their countries against Ukraine).

Language: English

Our team invites and encourages Social Work students to participate in Meetup on May 26, 2022

Feel free to choose among various ways of participation:

  1. present your scientific research papers;
  2. present your project’s results or methodological solutions in social work;
  3. present your practical or volunteering experience;
  4. listener and you will be engaged in discussions.

If you’ve decided to be a participant (you choose 1st, 2nd, or 3rd option), we kindly ask you to film a video (up to 3 minutes) OR to prepare a 1-page document with a short description (text or/and illustration) of your project.

You can add a link to your video or document while filling out the form.

The UW Statistical Consulting Service is now available for Spring quarter. Appointments will be held online via Zoom.

Faculty and graduate students in the Consulting Program of the Departments of Statistics and Biostatistics offer free statistical advice to the UW community through scheduled 50-minute consulting appointments during the academic year when classes are in session. They provide assistance with:

  • the design of studies and experiments, including the preparation of grant proposals
  • data visualization and presentation
  • choice and application of statistical methods
  • development of specialized statistical methods in some cases

The consultants have experience primarily with the R statistical analysis system, but they work with clients using whatever statistical package is most convenient for them. (Note: Statistical consulting is for study design and data analysis advice, not software tutorials.) Clients should come to consulting appointments prepared to provide background information, and to discuss the scientific aims of their research, study design, and approach.

For more information about the Service and to schedule an appointment, click on the following link:  UW STATISTICAL CONSULTING SERVICE

About the Consulting Program:  This program is a UW course for graduate students in the Departments of Statistics and Biostatistics. Through this course, students learn how to apply their statistical skills to a variety of real-world problems. Most appointments will have three to four consultants in attendance: two to three student trainees and one faculty advisor. The program is organized around the academic calendar and the participating student consultants change every quarter. Because this is a training program, each consulting appointment has multiple goals. In addition to helping clients, student consultants are developing their consulting skills. Many problems brought to the consulting program require the consultants to research and discuss possible solutions with program colleagues following an appointment to determine the most appropriate statistical methods or guidance. In these cases, follow-up appointments are typically scheduled. While resources are limited, some assistance with actual data analyses can be provided on a case-by-case basis, depending on consultant availability, client needs, the size of the problem, and data analysis tasks.

The Research Commons is again offering our asynchronous citation tools course aimed at graduate students at the end of next month (thank you to LibID for all the help you provided in creating this course). Students who participate will work through the course over a week and interact as a cohort in Slack, with the option to participate in synchronous sessions on Zoom if they’d like.

If so, join us for the Citation Management Tools Workshop! This workshop hosted by the UW Libraries is an opportunity to learn about citation management software and how to use it to develop a more efficient research workflow. We explore different tools that are supported by the Libraries and walk through how to install and use them. This is an asynchronous Canvas course that can be done at your own pace, with options for peer-to-peer interaction and support from Libraries staff during the week of 5/16-5/20. Optional synchronous sessions over Zoom will also be offered to augment the course, but are not required.

Graduate students can get more information and sign up here:
