The Harlan Hahn Fund call for proposals is now open for 2023-24. Current students, faculty, and staff from all three University of Washington campuses are invited to submit a grant proposal. Applications must describe research, writing, or activist projects that are framed within, aligned with, or informed by the academic field of Disability Studies. Harlan Hahn awards typically range between $500 and $5,000. The number and amount of the grants awarded depends on the quality of the individual projects and the overall number of eligible proposals received.

Use of Harlan Hahn Funds

  • Support of academic research projects, pedagogical research, or writing projects in Disability Studies or informed by Disability Studies.
  • Travel to conferences in the field of Disability Studies or related to Disability Studies, to present research or to participate in the Disability Studies academic community.
  • Support for the development of a course with Disability Studies content.
  • Support for disability related activist endeavors (e.g. web development, meeting support) that are aligned with Disability Studies.

Deadline and Notification

  • Applications are due March 6, 2023 by 11:59 pm.
  • The Harlan Hahn Grant Review Committee will notify the award recipients of its decisions by April 10, 2023.
  • Grants may commence June 1, 2023.
  • All grant-funded activities must be completed by June 30, 2024.

$25 Million Grants: Racism is a Public Health Crisis
The Gathering Collaborative along with King County government invites you, our community and business partners across the region to join us in continuing the critical work to undo the harms of systemic racism, which was declared a public health crisis by King County in 2020. We encourage all applicants to read over the Grant Program Overview and the Invitational Document in order to get grounded in this work.

NIH Request for Information: Violence Against Women Research
This RFI is intended to gather public input on priority scientific directions in violence against women (VAW) research. This includes cisgender, transgender, and gender-diverse persons who identify as a woman or girl, as well as other individuals assigned female at birth but who may not identify as a woman or girl. VAW includes: domestic or intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault and rape, dating violence and abuse, peer violence, physical and mental abuse, sexual coercion, stalking, homicide, and elder mistreatment. Responses must be submitted by March 31.

NIH is soliciting public input on a proposed revised framework for evaluating and scoring peer review criteria for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research project grant (RPG) applications. NIH is proposing to revise its policy of how peer reviewers score the criteria, and how NIH organizes the criteria for review purposes. Responses must be submitted by March 10.

NIH Seeking Input 
The NIH is seeking input about potential or existing primary or secondary preventive intervention strategies addressing social determinants of health to prevent mental health problems in populations experiencing health disparities. Responses must be submitted by March 1.

Seattle’s PB process will work with community members to decide how to invest $27.2 million back into BIPOC communities. The funding for this PB program came from a $100 million fund earmarked by then Mayor Jenny Durkan after community groups demanded investments into Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities during the protests for Black lives in the summer of 2020. This is a great opportunity for you and your community to get involved, practice advocacy and leadership, and reinvest in our communities.

The University District Street Medicine (UDSM) is an interdisciplinary, student- and community-driven bridge to care for those in the University District through dedicated street outreach, close community partnerships, and free clinic-based care. Are you a first-generation graduate student?

Are you a current UW student and at least 18 years of age?

Are you interested in making $25?

If so, consider volunteering for the UW Libraries Graduate Student Research study. The process will involve a 1-hour informal interview or journey-mapping activity with the participant via zoom or in-person. Participating in this study will help us understand first-generation graduate student research experiences so we can improve UW Libraries’ services and resources.

Selected participants will:

    • Be compensated $25 via Gift Card or Husky Card upon completion
    • Commit to a one-hour session through an interview or journey mapping exercise (Prior experience doing journey mapping is not required! We will explain everything.)

To volunteer to be a participant, complete our Volunteer Interest Form. We are planning to start scheduling sessions on the week of February 20th, 2023, but the form will remain open until 1-2 weeks before the end of the Winter Quarter.

The Harborview Medical Center Social Work Department is looking for an experienced Social Worker to join their Violence Intervention & Prevention Program. The program serves diverse, medically and psychosocially, complex patients with trauma related injuries secondary to gun violence. This position is based out of HMC’s General Surgery Clinic, but visits with patients may also occur in the inpatient setting and/or with other members of the care team. This position will provide case management, brief counseling, advocacy and work closely with the Violence Intervention and Prevention Specialist and community partners. Experience working with patients and families impacted by gun violence and bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

This is a full-time position with a Monday-Friday 800-1630 schedule, and a $5,000 sign-on bonus is available for new employees. For more information, please view our posting, here.

The UW School of Social Work Transracial Adoptee Group (TAG) invites all BIPOC adoptee students, staff, and faculty across all three campuses to attend our Winter 2023 potluck! The potluck will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 6:30pm PST in Room 306 of the School of Social Work building (4101 15th Avenue NE, Seattle, WA 98105-6299)

TAG is a student-led affinity group that offers support and community building to transracial adoptees at the University of Washington School of Social Work. Along with providing transracial adoptees an inclusive space to share stories, TAG is committed to increasing efforts to amplify the voices of adoptees in the classroom and on campus.

TAG and this event are open to all BIPOC adoptees that are current UW students, staff, and faculty, as well as previous TAG alumni.

 

Where would you go if you had five to eight months to travel solo? Which two regions and four to eight countries would you visit? What experiences would you seek out? How would you be transformed?

Each year a handful of lucky UW students get to make those decisions as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime with the support of a $23,000 Bonderman Fellowship. In 2023 we will accept applications from UW graduate and professional students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who are enrolled in spring quarter 2023. (Undergraduates are not eligible to apply in 2023. See here for more info on that decision). 

Applications are DUE on March 29, 2023 by 12pm (noon) PDT.

Join the ASUW Student Disability Commission & UW D-Center for our annual Disability Allyship Workshop on Thursday, February 9th from 4:00 to 5:30pm!

This webinar is open to all students, staff or faculty who are interested in learning how to be a better ally to the disability community. Attendees will learn about various frameworks to conceptualize disability, inclusive disability language, and various strategies to avoid ableism (discrimination on the basis of disability). Whether you are well-versed in disability justice, or new to the concept of disability altogether, this workshop is for you!

The UW Center for Human Rights has funding for undergraduate and graduate students across all three UW campuses, with applications opening up February 13-March 18. We’re excited that this year we were able to increase our funding amounts!

  • Priority to study and/or research about human rights
  • Approximately $10,000 available to distribute

3) The Dr. Lisa Sable Brown Fund provides financial resources for

  • Graduate students
  • Priority given to research that identifies acts of oppression of an individual’s human rights and advocates abolishing such practices that may be viewed as a form of slavery
  • Approximately $10,000 available to distribute

Congratulations to Jenn Stuber!
The UW School of Social Work, in collaboration with the UW SMART Center, has received $6 million from the U.S. Department of Education for a 5-year initiative that will put Master of Social Work students from diverse backgrounds in high-need school districts to serve as mental health professionals. Jennifer Stuber led this effort on behalf of SSW. Additional information can be found at the end of the newsletter.

UW Royalty Research Fund Inviting Applications
The UW Office of Research invites applications to the Spring 2023 round of the Royalty Research Fund (RRF) grant program. The purpose of the RRF is to advance new directions in research, particularly a.) In disciplines for which external funding opportunities are minimal; b.) for faculty who are junior in rank, and c.) when funding may provide unique opportunities to increase applicants’ competitiveness for subsequent funding. Applicants may apply for up to $40,000. Proposals are due March 6, 2023.

NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing Now In Effect
As of January 25, 2023, the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing is now in effect. All grant applications submitted to NIH that results in the generation of scientific data must now include a Data Management and Sharing Plan. Tips for writing a DMS plan and examples can be found on the NIH website.
