This project examines how poverty reduction agendas established at the end of the cold war are being superseded in a number of countries by assertive development rationales which prioritise structural transformation as a means to enable economic growth. This shift necessitates a reorganisation of social relations and the economies they enable on an unprecedented scale. It also entails a substantial reorganisation of the development policy enterprise to credibilize the turn to growth. My research explores the social and cultural effects of the new development agenda in Tanzania through a focus on changes in the organisation of policy knowledge and changes in the organisation of economic relations.
