NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research

NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Admin Supp) (PA-23-189)

In an effort to promote diversity in HIV-related research and in biomedical research, CFAR is promoting the NIH “diversity” supplement as a mechanism of support.  Each parent grant (including the CFAR) is limited in the number of diversity candidates it can support, so our intention is to promote this opportunity widely across our CFAR to HIV investigators with eligible grants.  The information below is meant to support HIV investigators and potential diversity candidates in applying for and securing these supplements.

Mechanism:  Administrative Supplement to existing NIH grant

Purpose:  Provide opportunities to develop research careers and improve participation for individuals from groups with low representation in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences.

Eligibility:  Individuals from identified groups from high school to the faculty level.  This includes individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds that have inhibited their ability to pursue a career in health-related research.  Additionally, NIH encourages institutions to consider women for faculty-level, diversity-targeted programs to address faculty recruitment, appointment, retention or advancement.  Please read the NIH program announcement to get a full understanding of eligibility.

Funding Available:  $5,000 to $100,000, depending on career level of the candidate.

Proposed Research:  In all cases, the proposed research experience must be an integral part of the approved, ongoing research of the parent grant, and it must have the potential to contribute significantly to the research career development of the candidate.  Projects must be consistent with the goal of strengthening the existing research program and with the overall programmatic balance and priorities of the funding component of the NIH.

Deadlines:  Variable depending on NIH Institute or Center.  See the Table of IC-Specific Information for more details.
