Gazan Death Toll Four Times Greater Than Official Estimates, According to Multiple Experts
In mid-June, the Gazan Ministry of Health reported a cumulative death toll of nearly 39,000 people attributed to the Israeli assault on Gaza, including 15,000 children. However, other credible researchers estimate that the true death toll is likely over four times higher than reported. Susan Abulhawa, a Gazan refugee, scientist, author and human rights activist argues that the currently reported numbers “don’t give an accurate picture at all”. Abulhawa states that the reported numbers only account for individuals going through the hospital system, leaving out those that are dying and being buried by their families at home, and those trapped under the rubble. Moreover, Gazans with comorbidities like diabetes, cancer, and hypertension who died due to medication inaccessibility, and those that were unidentifiable either by name or government issued identification numbers, were also not included in this estimate. In her detailed video, Abulhawa argues that the death toll as of early July 2024 was well over 193,000 Gazans. Watch the video below to learn about how she used official World Health Organization data to calculate this staggering estimate of mortality in Gaza.
This past week, The Lancet journal published a letter (Khatib, et al.) that corroborates Abulhawa’s findings, estimating a death toll exceeding 186,000 people. The authors state that their estimate accounts for the deaths of those still trapped under the rubble and those who died from indirect causes related to the overall Israeli assault, such as the rising numbers of communicable diseases, sexual and reproductive infections, malnutrition, and the rampant destruction of the health infrastructure in Gaza.
