Global WACh Graduate Certificate Student Sarah Hicks helps facilitate a virtual workshop to identify best PrEP delivery approaches in maternal-child health clinics in Kenya

For the required 90-hour Global WACh Certificate capstone, Sarah Hicks, a 2nd year student in the Department of Epidemiology, wanted to use the opportunity to join a HIV research team to understand what goes on “behind the scenes” of a large international study and to build on quantitative data management and processing skills. The PrEP Optimized for Mothers: Efficient PrEP Integration in MCH Clinics (PrEPARE) study, led by investigators Dr. Anjuli Wagner and John Kinuthia from the Department of Global Health, was a natural fit. PrEPARE seeks to identify ways to improve the efficiency of PrEP integration within maternal-child health (MCH) clinics in Kenya through stakeholder engagement, identifying challenges to implementation in the health system, and piloting and evaluating optimized MCH-PrEP approaches that decrease health care workers’ workload and enhance client experiences. Global WACh Certificate student Michelle Bulterys leverages global estimates for international forums focused on the health and wellbeing of HIV-exposed-uninfected children

Before Michelle Bulterys enrolled in the Epidemiology PhD program and the Global WACh Graduate Certificate, she interned with the Strategic Information and Evaluation Department of the Joint United Nations AIDS Programme (UNAIDS) in Geneva, Switzerland, where she learned about the complexities of gathering and validating country-level HIV estimates and synthesizing data into global reports to be used by clinicians, policy makers, and researchers around the world.  She gained strong mentorship from Dr. Mary Mahy, who leads the Epidemiology Team at UNAIDS.  Michelle and Dr. Mahy have continued to collaborate on various projects, including Michelle’s Certificate capstone—a 90-hour project designed for students to gain hands-on experience in the field of global health.

Global WACh Graduate Certificate Capstone Presentations on May 27

Over the year, three students enrolled in the Global WACh Graduate Certificate have been hard at work on their 90-hour capstone projects that focus on the health and well-being of women, adolescents, and children.

They will be developing a research-style poster and virtually presenting their projects to a small group of Global WACh researchers on Thursday, May 27th.  We celebrate the achievements and service of our students!  Meet our students and see a summary of their projects below.

Tikhala Itaye, Global WACh Certificate student, in summer internship to aid gender equity strategies

This summer, Tikhala Itaye, a MPH Global Health and Global WACh Certificate student, began an internship with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).  As a Summer Associate, Tikhala is supporting the Foundation’s Gender Equality Special Initiative (GESI) team to deepen an understanding of how existing program investments and activities affect or are affected by gender-based violence (GBV)—one of the most widespread human rights abuses that disproportionately affects girls and women.  Ending gender inequality in all forms is one of the World Health Organization’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  Tikhala’s efforts will provide strategic direction on integrating GBV prevention and response across the Foundation’s program cycle and investments. Q&A with Emily Robson: Perspectives as a nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic

University of Washington students are rising to the occasion to care for the most vulnerable populations during Seattle’s COVID-19 outbreak.  One of these students is Emily Robson, an incoming 2nd year Doctorate of Nurse Practice student in the Population Health Nursing Track and Global WACh Graduate Certificate student.  Emily is spending her summer as a full-time Registered Nurse at King County Public Health’s COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine Centers.  These sites provide supervised care to symptomatic or COVID-positive individuals who cannot quarantine or recover in their own home, or do not have a home.  These spaces support the community by providing a place of care and slow the spread of the virus to others.

We asked Emily to share her experience as an Isolation/Quarantine nurse and the lessons learned as she courageously and compassionately works on the frontlines of a public health emergency.

Global WACh Capstone Poster “Zoom-posium”

In light of social distancing guidelines to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus in Seattle, Global WACh is hosting a virtual poster session on Friday, May 29th from 10:30 AM-12:15 PM to showcase and celebrate the research achievements and service of graduating students of the Graduate Certificate in Global Health of Women, Adolescents, and Child Health (Global WACh Graduate Certificate Program).  This year’s event is open to only Global WACh faculty, staff, and students; capstone faculty advisors and peers who assisted with students’ projects; and students currently enrolled in the certificate program.

Eleven students will be summarizing learning experiences and outcomes of their required 90-hour capstone projects that focus on the health and well-being of women, adolescents, and children. Each student presenter will showcase their posters and answer questions from attendees. Students represent the following Schools and Departments: Global Health, Health Services, Nursing, and Pharmacy.

Winter Quarter Certificate Student Spotlight: Kristen Trivelli, Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner Student

Kristen Trivelli, a third-year Family Nurse Practitioner doctoral student in the School of Nursing and current Global WACh Certificate student, traveled to Zimbabwe in summer of 2018 to complete her certificate capstone on breastfeeding education.  The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the benefits associated with breastfeeding so valuable that it is the recommended feeding method for mothers and infants worldwide for the first six months of the infants’ lives.  However, current research shows exclusive breastfeeding rates are low in Zimbabwe.  With the support of the Department of Global Health’s GO-Health Fellowship, Kristen sought to understand how breastfeeding education is provided from the perspective of nurses, and how parents receive this education in Zimbabwe.  She designed and led her own qualitative study and hopes to share her findings with stakeholders to improve exclusive breastfeeding rates in the country. Certificate Student Fall Spotlight: Junyi Zhang

Last summer, Junyi Zhang, second-year MPH in Health Services and Global WACh Certificate student, studied abroad in Kampala, Uganda and started her Certificate capstone project.  The UW Uganda Study Abroad Program, co-directed by Drs. Amy Hagopian and Bert Stover of the Department of Health Services, brought Junyi and eight students to Uganda to study the relationship between water and health-based at a partner institution, Makerere University.  The four-week program included field trips to public water treatment facilities, bottling plants, farms, clinics and hospitals, family homes, and other places where people interact with water. Certificate Student Summer Spotlight: Edgar Calderon

Incoming second-year MPH and Global WACh Certificate student, Edgar Calderon, is spending his summer in Vaupés, Colombia completing his Certificate capstone project.  His project focuses on evaluating the Colombia Ministry of Health’s (MOH) gender-based violence (GBV) messaging to rural indigenous communities in Vaupés and understanding how community leaders perceive and respond to the messages.  GBV is a human rights violation and global health problem deeply rooted in gender inequalities.  Effective messages around the prevention and elimination of GBV should be meaningful, culturally relevant, and well understood by their intended audience.  There is growing recognition in research that health-related messages and materials can be more effective when they are culturally tailored and appropriate for diverse populations.
