Dr. Dickens Onyango receives Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award to support research career development in TB prevention among people living with HIV

Congratulations to Dr. Dickens Onyango (Deputy Director of Medical Services, Kisumu County Health Department and visiting research scientist at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya) for receiving a National Institute of Health Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award for “Enhancing Adherence and Completion of the Three-Month Isoniazid with Rifapentine (3HP) Tuberculosis Preventive Therapy Regimen Through Biomarker-Guided Adherence Counselling (ACT-TPT).” Collaborating institutions include the Kisumu County Department of Health, Kenyatta National Hospital, and University of Washington.
The award supports an intensive, mentored research career development experience that will allow Dr. Onyango to further develop and expand skills in qualitative research, human-centered design, randomized controlled trials, and advanced implementation science methods to evaluate multicomponent interventions while growing in his career in tuberculosis (TB) prevention among people living with HIV (PLHIV). Global WACh researchers and partners at the 2025 International Workshop on Pediatrics & HIV and International AIDS Society Conference: Posters and Presentations

Researchers from the University of Washington (UW), University of Nairobi, and Kenyatta National Hospitals at IAS 2025 in July 2025.
In July, researchers affiliated with UW/Global WACh and Kenyan partner institutions attended two conferences held in Kigali, Rwanda: The International Workshop on Pediatrics & HIV held from July 11-12 and the International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science held from July 13-17. Both conferences are highly influential meetings on cutting-edge HIV research and its applications to move science into policy and practice.
We’ve rounded up 19 poster abstracts and one oral abstract by University of Washington, University of Nairobi, and Kenyatta National Hospital faculty, staff, and student researchers working on several collaborative studies based in Kenya. Their findings presented the last scientific discoveries on maternal mental health, childhood neurodevelopment, father engagement, pediatric HIV prevention and care, and PrEP uptake and adherence among adolescents and young women. Researchers present latest findings to support adolescents living with HIV at Adherence 2021

Adherence 2021, hosted by the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care and held from November 7-9, 2021, focused on state-of-the-science evidence, best practices, and the real-world implementation of behavioral, clinical, structural, and other interventions to maximize the therapeutic and preventative effects of antiretroviral agents. The annual conference provides a forum for discussion and presentation of implementation science focused on closing evidence-to-practice gaps across the HIV prevention and care continua, as well as community engagement in planning, implementing, and monitoring HIV responses in affected communities.
Below are three abstracts by Global WACh researchers and collaborators that showcase the latest discoveries in interventions to improve outcomes in adolescents living with HIV in Kenya.

Researchers present at the virtual International Workshop on HIV Pediatrics 2020

The 2020 International Workshop on HIV & Pediatrics was held virtually on November 16th and 17th. This is the only scientific meeting entirely devoted to research in the prevention and treatment of HIV infections in infants, children, and adolescents, making it the premier forum for the world’s leading researchers. UW, Kenyatta National Hospital, and University of Nairobi researchers receive award to develop HIV screening strategies in Kenya

As prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programs globally continue to increase reach and effectiveness, fewer children are living with HIV, but a growing proportion has had HIV exposure. HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) children in sub-Saharan Africa are a rapidly growing population in need of care to ensure their optimal health and well-being. Compared to HIV-unexposed children, HEU children are more vulnerable to risks of illness and death and may have poorer neurodevelopmental and growth outcomes. (more…)

Dr. Keshet Ronen receives 2nd year funding for social media-based counseling intervention to local peripartum adolescents
Congratulations to Dr. Keshet Ronen, Clinical Assistant Professor in Global Health, and collaborators for receiving additional funding from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Social Media and Adolescent Health Research Team for the “Social media support for peripartum adolescents in Seattle” study. They will continue developing and piloting a social media group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention—a form of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps patients understand how thoughts and feelings influence behavior—to prevent perinatal depression among adolescents. Researchers share latest findings at the International Workshop on HIV & Adolescence in Nairobi, Kenya

Last week, Global WACh researchers attended the 3rd International Workshop on HIV & Adolescence from October 2-4 in Nairobi, Kenya. This workshop is an inclusive summit for multidisciplinary experts working with adolescents affected by HIV to share experiences, knowledge, and best practices with the aim of defining a pathway forward for optimizing care. Adolescents are developmentally at a difficult crossroad, which makes it challenging to attract and sustain adolescents’ focus on maintaining their health. Global WACh is leading multiple projects that put adolescents at the center of strategies and interventions to improve adherence to treatment for long-term health benefits.

Dr. Kristin Beima-Sofie awarded 2019 CFAR NIA to design strategies for data-informed caregiver intervention to improve adolescent HIV outcomes

We are delighted to announce Dr. Kristin Beima-Sofie (Acting Assistant Professor, Global Health) is a recipient of the 2019 UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) New Investigator Award! The award offers start-up funding for junior investigators to conduct independent HIV/AIDS research to support future scholarly endeavors. Dr. Beima-Sofie’s study titled, “Developing a data-informed caregiver intervention to improve adolescent HIV,” will explore perspectives of caregivers of adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) and key stakeholders in Kenya to design an intervention that equips caregivers with the knowledge and social support skills to most effectively improve ALHIV health outcomes. New study will deliver social media-based counseling intervention to local peripartum adolescents

Dr. Keshet Ronen (Clinical Assistant Professor, Global Health) received a Technology and Adolescent Mental Wellness grant by the University of Wisconsin’s Social Media and Adolescent Health Research Team (SMAHRT). The new study, entitled “Social media support for peripartum adolescents in Seattle”, takes lessons learned in Kenya using social media to facilitate peer support for youth and applies them here in Seattle.
