Class of 2024 Global WACh Graduate Certificate Program student capstone round-up

We are thrilled to celebrate the graduations of eight students enrolled in the Global WACh Graduate Certificate Program. They are graduating with master degrees from various academic departments, along with the 15-credit certificate that offers additional coursework and a 90-hour capstone opportunity in woman, adolescent, and child health training and education.

Students will present their capstones at Global WACh’s Student Poster Symposium on Tuesday, May 28th from 3-4 PM in the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health Room 101.  The event draws in members of our community to celebrate students’ achievements, service, and training during their academic journeys at UW.  Attend the event to learn about their work.  Meet our incredible students and read brief summaries of their projects below.

Gut Health team shares experience supporting research consortiums at CUGH 2024

Global WACh team members, Sonia Rao and Alyson Shumays, attended the 2024 Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Conference, held from March 7-10, in Los Angeles, CA to share what they’ve learned from supporting international research consortiums under the Gut Health and Child Survival research portfolio.

This year’s theme, “Global Health Without Borders: Acting for Impact,” created an environment for scientists, students and implementers from academia, NGOs, government, and the private sector to learn, share research, collaborate, and develop partnerships to address global health challenges. Global WACh featured two poster abstracts under one of seven subthemes, “Decolonizing – Reforming Global Health Equity, Justice, Global Health Education and Research.” Click the titles below to view the posters. Researchers share pediatric and adolescent HIV and associated neurological research at CROI 2024

Global WACh researchers participated in the 31st Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI), held from March 3 to 6, in Denver, CO. They shared the latest discoveries in HIV and Co-Infectious Through the Lifecycle research portfolio on topics covering data-informed stepped adolescent HIV care approaches and neuropsychological outcomes in children associated with HIV.

Enterics for Global Health Consortium publishes a protocol supplement describing the study rationale and methods

Sixteen articles authored by the Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella surveillance study Consortium were recently published in the March 2024 issue of Open Forum Infectious Diseases.

The Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella surveillance study is a multi-country diarrhea surveillance study that aims to generate key data to optimize the design and implementation of pivotal Shigella vaccine trials. The protocol supplement describes the study rationale and current Shigella vaccine landscape, Consortium governance structure, epidemiologic and laboratory methods, and country site descriptions (Bangladesh, The Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Pakistan, and Peru).

Global WACh hosts Dr. Eleanor Namusoke Magongo for the Endowed DELV Lecture and Faculty Exchange in Global Health

From April 2-4, Global WACh hosted Dr. Eleanor Namusoke Magongo, Paediatric and Adolescent HIV Care and Treatment Team Lead at the Ministry of Health Uganda, for a series of guest speaking events and meetings at the UW.  Dr. Magongo is a Pediatrician and Child Health Specialist with 15 years of experience leading teams to implement, monitor and scale up pediatrics and adolescent HIV programs in Uganda. She was selected by team members as the distinguished scholar of this year’s Endowed DELV Lecture and Faculty Exchange in Global Health program.  The program is supported by an endowed gift and intended to advance learning for UW faculty, staff, and students and to foster collaboration in global health. Pregnancy and the birth of a child is an exciting and celebratory time for many families. However, for many women and their families, it can be a difficult time if the mother is experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety. These feelings may get better or go away with time, but if they don’t, it is critical to access care to prevent worsening symptoms and recover. Without appropriate intervention, these feelings can have long term adverse implications for the mental, physical, and emotional health of women, children, and their families. (more…)

EFGH collaborators convene in Istanbul for pediatric diarrheal disease research

Collaborators of the Enterics for Global Health (EFGH) Shigella surveillance study recently attended a three-day convening in Istanbul, Turkey. The study’s second annual convening gathered nearly 40 collaborators for a series of scientific updates, data analyses planning, and discussions to guide the research consortium into the final stages of the study. MIND collaborators convene in Nairobi to advance childhood development and mental health research in Kenya

In January, nearly 40 collaborators affiliated with the Drug, microbiome, and immune determinants of birth and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with exposure to HIV infection (MIND) grant attended a two-day convening in Nairobi, Kenya. Launched in early 2023, the project leverages three ongoing childhood development studies in Kenya and supports two core groups that provide access to technologies, services, training, and consultation to successfully execute the studies. The meeting provided a forum to share progress and discuss future directions of research collaborations from UW/Global WACh, Kenyatta National Hospital, University of Nairobi, Emory University, Fred Hutch, and Makerere University. Collaborators gather in Nairobi for annual meeting on STD, HIV, and SRH research in Kenya

In January, collaborators from Global WACh and its long-time partner institutions, the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta National Hospital, and Kenya Medical Research Institute, gathered at the Nairobi Serena Hotel in Kenya for an annual meeting centered on STD, HIV, and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) research. The week-long University of Nairobi STD/HIV/SRH Research Group Meeting provided an opportunity to learn about each other’s work and scientific findings, build community within study teams, meet new people across teams, and engage in meaningful discussions to steer future directions of this collaborative research.

New project aims to expand access to sexual and reproductive health care in South King County

Starting this February, Dr. Arianna Means (Assistant Professor, Global Health) and Chloe Morozoff (PhD Student, Global Health) will work in partnership with Public Health—Seattle & King County (PHSKC) to optimize sexual and reproductive health care (SRH) for patients, particularly English Language Learners and uninsured individuals who encounter barriers to accessing healthcare, in South King County, WA.
