He’ll explain what makes a plant native or not, share which native species perform best in a garden situation, & tell you why you should or shouldn’t plant them. Part travelogue, part how-to, this lively presentation will illustrate the ups & downs of gardening with native plants in the PNW. Recording will be available to registrants for 4 weeks after the event. Richard Hartlage developed the immersive planting design in collaboration with Field Operations, the project’s lead landscape architect & urban planner. Richard will present how the plants are organized & maintained. Each planting zone tells a unique story rooted in local history & ecology. Richard is the CEO & founding partner of the Seattle-based landscape architectural firm Land Morphology. His award-winning designs incorporate sophisticated horticulture & historical knowledge. The practice encourages you to walk in the forest at a slower pace & take in the atmosphere around you. These walks are slow-paced & generally cover less than a mile of trail.     Our free educational tour includes a casual walk through various areas of the Washington Park Arboretum, featuring seasonal viewing of collections plants, explorations of botany & the history of the organization. Our June tour will feature the Pacific Connections Garden, displaying cultivars & native plants from our region as well as Chile, China, New Zealand & Australia. Because this garden is at the south end of the Arboretum, the tour will be starting at the Japanese Garden Parking lot (1075 Lake Washington Blvd, E, Seattle).
