Peer Adviser Position Hiring – Academic Year 2023-2024

Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity (OMA&D) – Academic Counseling Services (ACS)

Peer Adviser Position – Academic Year 2023-2024

Position Objectives: OMA&D Peer Advisers work closely with the OMA&D Professional Academic Advisers and students within ACS Programs. Our Peer Advisers advise OMAD undergraduate students on a drop in one-to-one basis supporting them through the complexities of University of Washington life. We serve underrepresented students which includes low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students, accordingly our Peer Advisers are sensitive to different student population needs.

Peer Adviser Responsibilities:

·      Work closely with OMA&D ACS staff in support of students that are affiliated with Academic Counseling Services (EOP, TRIO SSS, CAMP, Champions).

·      Provide one-on-one drop in (15 minute) advising to pre-major students and document meetings notes on Compass.

·      Utilize or navigate various student databases (EARS, SDB)

·      Guide students in navigating University policies, procedures, general degree requirements (General Requirements, housing policies, Majors, etc.)

·      Guide students through various on campus resources and online such as MyPlan, Canvas, MyUW, Career Center, Financial Aid Office, Academic Support Services, etc.)

·      Provide appropriate referrals to different offices and/or department advisers based on services needed by students. Be familiar with the University of Washington and OMA&D undergraduate academic programs/support services.

·      Work on special projects with Enrollment Services, Achievement Scholars, and other ACS pro-staff.

·      Abide by Federal, State, and University laws, rules and regulations.

·      Work as a team with other Peer Advisers.

·      Assist students with the registration processes & policies (Add/drop courses, withdraw, etc.)

·      Work as a member of the office in keeping the workspace clean and organized.

Qualifications:

·      Current University of Washington, OMA&D, undergraduate student and have attended at least three quarters at the UW prior to start date.

·      Experience in leadership, advising and/or related activities (FIG Peer Instructor/Orientation Leader, OMA&D Student Associates, OMA&D program interns, student groups, etc.)

·      Ability to work with confidential information.

·      Strong interpersonal communication skills and active listening skills.

·      Ability to work with diverse populations of students and genuine interest in supporting and working with OMA&D students.

·      Demonstrated knowledge of the University of Washington and OMA&D resources.

Time Commitment and Salary:

·      8 – 10 hours a week, 10am-6pm office hours during the academic year.

·      Salary: $18.69/hour. Mandatory training during the week of Sept 12th-15th. No exception.
