Manager of Marine Ops

By Meegan Corcoran

Friday Harbor Labs warmly welcomes Meegan Corcoran as the newly fulltime Manager of Marine Operations. Meegan stepped into the position in October 2015, but has recently been made fulltime. She and her crew have been working diligently making improvements to the R/V Centennial as well as promoting the vessel. Meegan also oversees the dock and small boats, via Kristy Kull.

Meegan has a colorful past full of boating experience. She spent eight years in the U.S. Navy as a sonar technician where she lived in Japan, Guam, and Hawaii. After leaving the Armed Forces she became a fisheries biologist in UW Fisheries and then operated small boats on the Columbia River. This experience led Meegan to try her hand at salmon fishing in Alaska. After that summer, Meegan began graduate school at UW’s School of Marine and Environmental Affairs where she used her Navy experience to study the legal implications of sonar testing and training relating to the negative impacts on marine mammals. When not studying, Meegan was often found relaxing on her sailboat.

She came to San Juan Island initially to work in the whale watch industry, but began working as a deckhand on board the R/V Centennial in her spare time. It was there the decision was made to bring her on fulltime. Meegan hit the deck running and began promoting the boat within the University of Washington as well as other institutions of higher education throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Welcome on board, Meegan!
