Bridge Shelter part-time & on-call positions

The Bridge Shelter focuses on harm reduction by providing low barrier interim housing for homeless individuals who frequently would not be able to stay at other shelters due to active drug or alcohol use. 

Their goal is to provide the people who need it the most a home where they can feel safe and start the process of stabilizing their lives no matter their situation.

American Red Cross Umoja Blood Drive volunteer opportunities

The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers to assist with their Umoja Resource Group to promote diversity and inclusion by engaging the African-American community in the donation of blood products and increase education and awareness of sickle cell anemia through the recruitment of donors and the organization and staffing of blood drives.

EPI 220 – Sexually Transmitted Infections: Causes & Consequences

Who gets STIs and why?  How do you prevent  and treat STIs?  What new STIs have recently emerged?  In this course, you will:

  • Identify populations at risk for STIs
  • Gain familiarity with infectious disease epidemiology
  • Outline risk factors for STI & HIV infection
  • Evaluate STI prevention interventions

Phi Delta Epsilon William Gelfand Lecture 5/9

Phi Delta Epsilon International Medical Fraternity is proud to announce the topic of their third annual William Gelfand Lecture on Thursday, May 9th: “Making Changes – The Ethics of Genetics Research Tools from HeLa Cells to CRISPR.”

Their speaker is Dr. Matthew Bryce Taylor, Ph. D., a senior fellow at the Dunham Lab at the University of Washington Department of Genome Sciences.

The event is completely FREE and is open to the UW community and general public. Doors open at 7:00 pm and light refreshments will be provided.

This is WA Alpha’s third lecture as part of their annual William Gelfand Distinguished Lectureship series. Summer Research Internships for URM students

The Office for Teaching, Education and Research (OTER) in partnership with the Center for Diversity and Health Equity is debuting a new Summer Research Internship for Underrepresented Minorities. 

The Office for Teaching, Education and Research (OTER) in partnership with the Center for Diversity and Health Equity is debuting a new Summer Research Internship for Underrepresented Minorities. 

The goal of the program is to provide Underrepresented Minority (URM) students an opportunity to engage in basic, clinical and/or translational research projects under the mentorship of experienced researchers and principal investigators.

Students will learn to use lab equipment (as applicable), meet with mentors, and gain valuable research experience. Students will also attend career and professional training sessions.

Students may also be afforded the opportunity to shadow physicians at Seattle Children’s Hospital to provide exposure to the clinical facets of medicine.

The purpose of the internship is to provide exposure to biomedical and/or public health research and to engage students to consider careers in science, medicine and public health, and enhance the research capabilities of underrepresented minorities in research.

Seattle University Pre-Health Advising and Career Engagement Office is excited to present the annual Health Professions Expo 2019 which will take place Tuesday, April 30th at 5:00-8:00pm in the Student Center, Room 160.

 Leading groups of underrepresented high school and college students in exploring dental and medical related careers through hands-on workshops.
 Serving as a liaison with community members to facilitate interprofessional clinical outreach activities.
 Assisting with courses and outreach activities aimed to prepare students to serve in underserved and rural populations, particularly working with homeless individuals.
 Providing oral hygiene instruction and oral health information in a variety of settings.

ITHS Translational Science Expo 5/13

The mission of the Institute of Translational Health Sciences is to speed science to clinical practice through fostering innovative research, cultivating multi-disciplinary research partnerships, and ensuring a pipeline of next generation researchers through robust educational and career development programs.

This year, they are expanding their outreach to undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in health science (this could include basic science, medicine, public health, or medical device development to name a few).

On May 13, they will host their annual ITHS Translational Science Expo at the HUB. The Expo typically attracts over 100 investigators, students, and post-docs, in health research from all disciplines at the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s, Fred Hutch, and the WWAMI region This is a great opportunity for undergraduate students to hear poster presentations, network with other researchers, and learn about a career in translational science.

UPREP workshop on Letters of Recommendation 4/16

UPREP is a collaborative project between the CEDI student affinity groups led by SNMA.  UPREP offers monthly workshops to underrepresented minority students and other aspiring future applicants who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine.  We offer workshops focusing on topics ranging from AMCAS application, financial aid, writing a personal statement, MCAT prep, interviews, and others.
