by jcmills on October 14th, 2010

Gwendolyn Dubois Shaw is an Associate Professor of American Art at the University of Pennsylvania, and she holds the American Art History Professorship at the University of Washington School of Art during Autumn Quarter 2010. She will give a lecture, titled “Nascent: Raphaelle Peale, Sargent Johnson and the problem of Artistic Identity,” at the Seattle Art Museum at 7pm on Thursday, 28 October. The presentation examines issues of enacted biography in the work of two very different American artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), a still life and portrait painter from the Early Republican period, and Sargent Johnson (1888-1967), a sculptor and print maker from the era of the Harlem Renaissance. Tickets are available for advance purchase: $5 SAM members, $8 students and seniors, $10 general.
