Faculty News: Akio Takamori
3D4M Professor Akio Takamori has work in a current show at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art titled Collecting with Passion: Contemporary Ceramics from the Lennie and Jerry Berkowitz Collection. The exhibit opened in December 2010 and runs through 10 April 2011.
Senior VCD Project Published
Francis Luu, Donica Ida, Terry Liu, and Ivy Sa (all BFA 2008) collaborated on a senior Visual Communication Design exhibit project titled “The Want Store.” It has recently been published in Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills by David Sherwin.
Faculty News: Cynthea Bogel
Art History Associate Professor Cynthea Bogel gave a paper titled “Representation, Visual Efficacy, and the Impact of Mikkyō” at the John C. Weber International Symposium on Japanese Religion and Culture, “Images and Objects in Japanese Buddhist Practice,” on 07 October 2010. In early November 2010, she presented two papers at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London on Japanese Buddhist sculpture; she gave a graduate seminar on Chinese and Japanese Buddhist ritual goods and materials at the Royal College of Arts; and she participated in a workshop on Esoteric Buddhism and Icons in Japan at the Centre for Japanese Religions, School for Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Bogel was appointed to the Standing Advisory Board for the Buddhism Bibliography that is part of Oxford University Press’s Oxford Bibliographies Online. She will present a paper on Esoteric Buddhist art at the Association for Asian Studies Conference in early April 2011.
Alden Mason Exhibit at SAM
Professor Emeritus Alden Mason (BFA 1942, MFA 1947) has been a well-known painter for many years. A number of his pieces are in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum, and they currently have an exhibit that highlights work from throughout his ongoing career. The show remains up into mid-October 2011. In Seattle, he is represented by Foster White Gallery. Many images of his work can be seen on their website. Regina Hackett, art critic, wrote about him on her blog in December 2010.
Student News: Melanie Enderle
Art History PhD student Melanie Enderle will be giving a presentation at the Western Association of Women Historians Conference at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, in early April 2011. Her paper is titled “The New Woman as Reflected by Female Stage Performers in American Painting, 1880-1940.”
Faculty News: Denzil Hurley
Painting + Drawing Professor Denzil Hurley had work in a show at Danese in New York City. The exhibit, titled Works on Paper, opened on 07 January and ran through 05 February 2011. In Seattle, he is represented by Francine Seders Gallery.
Update: Danese included Hurley’s work in its booth at The Armory Show – Modern in New York City during early March 2011.

Art History Professor Robin Wright, Professor Emeritus Bill Holm, and Katie Bunn-Marcuse (MA 1998, PhD 2007), were all quoted in a New York Times article published 06 February 2011. The article, titled “Honoring Art, Honoring Artists,” discusses the recent re-installation of American Indian art at the Denver Art Museum and the growing interest in researching individual artists in a field where many of the creators have been previously treated as simply anonymous. Holm, Wright, and, more recently, Bunn-Marcuse have all played a role in identifying First Nations artists from the Northwest Coast region.
Scholarships for Scholars XI
Join us for one of the School of Art’s biggest annual events: Scholarships for Scholars. It will take place on Tuesday, 08 February 2011, starting at 6pm in the 3D4M/CMA Buildings. The evening includes an exhibition of work by 1st year 3D4M graduate students, studio tours, a silent auction, and a raffle. The event website includes images of the raffle prizes and the growing number of items included in the silent auction plus contact information for buying raffle tickets or making bids. All proceeds go to scholarships for 3D4M graduate students.

School of Art students! Sign up now for a digital portfolio workshop on Friday, 25 February, from 10am – 12:30pm by emailing Doug Manelski. You will learn: how to photograph your artwork; digital camera basics, including camera RAW; lighting for 2D and 3D works of various sizes; and how to apply what you learn to shooting in the School of Art Digital Portfolio Studio (DPS; room 022), at home, or in your studio.

Joe Davis Exhibit and Lecture
Tuesday, 01 February, from 4-7pm is the opening of Resonance: Nature, Glass, and Standing Waves in the Art of Joe Davis at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Davis, an artist-researcher in laboratories at both MIT and Harvard University, is a pioneer of “bioart,” creating works that explore biological materials, genetics, and broader questions about the nature of life. A portion of this exhibit will feature pieces he made in collaboration with glass artists during a summer 2010 residency at the Pilchuck Glass School. The exhibit closes on Saturday, 19 February.
Davis will talk about his work on Wednesday, 02 February, at 7pm in Kane Hall, room 120. The lecture is titled “Perché non parli? Paradox and Palimpsest in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.”
