The late Robert Sperry (MFA, 1955; Professor, Art) is being featured in a retrospective exhibition at Bellevue Arts Museum titled Robert Sperry: Bright Abyss. The show runs from 10 October 2009 through 31 January 2010. There is a film series associated with the exhibit.

The Seattle Asian Art Museum is hosting the Saturday University Lecture Series this fall. The series theme is Asia in Focus, and it includes three lectures each on India, China, and Japan. The series starts on October 3rd at 9:30am. Three SoA faculty are lecturing for the series: Sonal Khullar, Haicheng Wang, and Cynthea Bogel.
Special note: UW students with ID may receive complimentary admission at the door on a first come, first served basis.

Curator of Native American Art at the Seattle Art Museum, Barbara Brotherton (PhD 1994), gave a sold-out lecture on 03 February 2010 titled “Vampires, Werewolves and Quileute Art”. The lecture introduced Quileute culture and art, partially in preparation for an August 2010 exhibit, and raised questions about media appropriation of Native people. The Quileute have been forced into the media spotlight by the Twilight series of books. [Update on 03 Sep 10: Behind the Scenes: The Real Story of the Quileute Wolves is on display at the Seattle Art Museum until August 2011.]

Barbara Brotherton (PhD, 1994) edited S’abadeb, The Gifts: Pacific Coast Salish Art and Artists, which has recently been chosen to receive the 2009 Washington State Book Award in the general non-fiction category.

Many SoA alumni and friends are part of The Window Art Project, in Madison Park, Seattle, which was organized by MadArt. It runs through 04 October 2009. The seven alums are:

Roger Shimomura (BFA, 1961) has a show opening at the Wing Luke Asian Museum in Seattle. The exhibit is titled Yellow Terror: The Collections and Paintings of Roger Shimomura, and it runs from 11 September 2009 through 18 April 2010. More information is available on the museum’s website. SoA benefits from UW STF grants

The School of Art is once again benefiting from grants awarded by the UW Student Technology Fee Committee. Five School of Art proposals were funded for a grand total of $113,172. All Student Technology Fee grants must support the purchase of equipment and/or resources that students can use or from which they directly benefit.
