Program Overview

The UW Medicine Compliance Program assists UW Medicine in achieving its financial, operational, and strategic goals while maintaining compliance with all applicable healthcare laws and regulations. The scope, structure, core functions and activities of the program are updated as necessary to reflect organizational and policy changes, programmatic refinements, and best practices for addressing compliance risk.

The Role of UW Medicine Compliance

UW Medicine Compliance develops, maintains and oversees compliance programs for:
Harborview Medical Center  (HMC)
Valley Medical Center  (VMC)
UW Medical Center – Montlake  (UWMC)
UW Medical Center – Northwest  (UWMC)
UW Medicine Primary Care Clinics (UWMPC)
Airlift Northwest  (ALNW)
UW School of Medicine  (SoM)

UW Medicine’s Compliance program is based on the following elements:

  • Commitment and support from executive leaders
  • Institutional policies, standards and expectations
  • Education and outreach efforts to ensure that workforce members understand their rights and responsibilities
  • Monitoring and auditing activities to ensure the effectiveness of internal controls
  • Effective mechanisms for reporting compliance concerns, including a hotline that enables anonymous reporting
  • Timely investigation of reported concerns and protection of complainant rights
  • Appropriate sanctions and corrective actions to address noncompliance when it occurs
  • Process improvement projects as needed to enhance compliance efforts
  • On-going risk assessments, evaluations of program effectiveness, proactive responses to regulatory developments and annual reporting
