Common Compliance Questions:

Who can order laboratory and radiology services billed to Medicare?

Washington state law allows pharmacists, dieticians, and genetic counselors to order laboratory services in certain situations. Our state laws may allow other types of providers to order laboratory or radiology services. Some payors may allow coverage of diagnostic tests ordered by these provider types. Medicare will only allow coverage of laboratory and radiology services ordered by the following types of providers:

  • Physicians
  • Podiatrists
  • Dentists
  • Optometrists
  • Fellows
  • Residents
  • Physician Assistants
  • Nurse Practitioners

Can I accept a gift from a patient and, if so, does it matter what type of gift it is or how much it’s worth?

UW Medicine workforce members should not accept gifts or gratuities that exceed more than nominal value from patients, and should never accept cash or a cash equivalent (check or gift card) in any dollar amount. Nominal value gifts such as flowers, chocolates or home-baked goods may be accepted but should be shared with your team. If a patient or their family gives you cash or a cash equivalent, you should notify your direct supervisor or manager, who can help contact UW Medicine Advancement at writemed@uw.edu / 206.543.5686 to process the gift as a donation to UW Medicine.

How can I find out if I’m able to care for a patient who is not located in WA State via telehealth?

The practice of medicine occurs where the patient is located. If you are not licensed in that state, the resources on the Remote Licensure Program page show if there is a documented exception to licensing requirements that the patient situation. There is a separate document for MDs and ARNP/PA. If the information for the state in question is not shown, please reach out to moosl@uw.edu. Does Compliance provide Epic access audit trails to patients?

No. Patients are not entitled to obtain a copy of the Epic access audit trail under the HIPAA right to obtain access to their medical records. Compliance uses Epic access audit trails internally as a tool to conduct patient privacy investigations.
