Diversity Leadership Conference
The Diversity Leadership Conference is a free, half-day conference hosted at the University of Washington each year to encourage students to strengthen their leadership skills and cultural awareness, engage in critical dialogues about activism and social justice, and network with peers and professionals from similar backgrounds and experiences. This year, we are excited to present the 9th annual Diversity Leadership Conference, with the theme “Defying – and Redefining – Expectations”.
Dia de los Muertos Celebration
Join the Kelly ECC community and Latinx Student Commission in celebrating the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by constructing a multicultural altar in the ECC lounge. The celebration will feature traditional treats and the opportunity to learn and create traditional Day the Dead artifacts: papel picado (paper decorations), Calaveras (sugar skulls), and flor de muerto (marigolds).
Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation Workshop
What is cultural appropriation really, and why is it harmful? This presentation provides definitions, historical and cultural information, and examines the complexities and opportunities for exploitation and oppression of non-dominant cultures by even well-meaning people. Through activities and discussions, participants will explore ways to understand the difference between appreciation and appropriation and gain the confidence to have difficult conversations with peers for better understanding across cultural differences.
