UW Alumna Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi Killed by Israeli Military
Turkish-American Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Psychology and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures in June of this year. The human rights activist was killed by Israeli military on September 6 at an International Solidarity Movement protest against illegal Israeli settlement expansions in the West Bank, an occupied territory in Palestine. Eygi was shot in the head as the Israeli military opened fire on demonstrators and later pronounced dead at Rafidia Hospital in Nablus.
Another activist at the September 6 protest shared that Eygi had only arrived in the West Bank three days prior, excited to advocate for Palestinian self-determination. Eygi is one of many protestors and journalists to be killed by Israel’s military for advocating for the enforcement of international laws in Palestine. Israel’s violence against civilians and suppression of critical human rights like peaceful protesting and journalism cannot continue without legitimate international consequences.
The Global Health Justice Team offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi for this tragic loss.
