Global WACh Certificate Program AY24 Student Capstone Round-up

We are thrilled to celebrate the graduations of eight students enrolled in the Global WACh Graduate Certificate Program. They are graduating with master degrees from various academic departments, along with the 15-credit certificate that offers additional coursework and a 90-hour capstone opportunity in woman, adolescent, and child health training and education.
Students will present their capstones at Global WACh’s Student Poster Symposium on Tuesday, May 28th from 3-4 PM in the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health Room 101. The event draws in members of our community to celebrate students’ achievements, service, and training during their academic journeys at UW. Attend the event to learn about their work. Global WACh Student Poster Symposium celebrates student achievements

Members of the UW global health community gathered at the poster symposium in the Hans Rosling Center.
On June 1st, Global WACh hosted its first Student Poster Symposium to showcase scientific results by affiliated graduate student researchers and celebrate their achievements over the academic year.
This hour-long event provided an opportunity for current students to share project summaries related to academic requirements (e.g. dissertation, capstone) or as Research Assistants supporting ongoing projects. Some posters were created for the event, while others were previously featured at other scientific conferences and could be accessible to the UW global health community.
Faculty, staff, and students attended to view the posters and chat with the students to learn more about their contributions that help advance Global WACh’s science in collaboration with partner organizations. (more…)

Global WACh Certificate students receive DGH travel fellowships

New PhD grad Nuttada Panpradist first Bioengineering Student to Complete Global WACh Certificate

Global WACh Graduate Certificate Student Sarah Hicks helps facilitate a virtual workshop to identify best PrEP delivery approaches in maternal-child health clinics in Kenya

For the required 90-hour Global WACh Certificate capstone, Sarah Hicks, a 2nd year student in the Department of Epidemiology, wanted to use the opportunity to join a HIV research team to understand what goes on “behind the scenes” of a large international study and to build on quantitative data management and processing skills.
The PrEP Optimized for Mothers: Efficient PrEP Integration in MCH Clinics (PrEPARE) study, led by investigators Dr. Anjuli Wagner and John Kinuthia from the Department of Global Health, was a natural fit. PrEPARE seeks to identify ways to improve the efficiency of PrEP integration within maternal-child health (MCH) clinics in Kenya through stakeholder engagement, identifying challenges to implementation in the health system, and piloting and evaluating optimized MCH-PrEP approaches that decrease health care workers’ workload and enhance client experiences. Global WACh Certificate student Michelle Bulterys leverages global estimates for international forums focused on the health and wellbeing of HIV-exposed-uninfected children

Before Michelle Bulterys enrolled in the Epidemiology PhD program and the Global WACh Graduate Certificate, she interned with the Strategic Information and Evaluation Department of the Joint United Nations AIDS Programme (UNAIDS) in Geneva, Switzerland, where she learned about the complexities of gathering and validating country-level HIV estimates and synthesizing data into global reports to be used by clinicians, policy makers, and researchers around the world. She gained strong mentorship from Dr. Mary Mahy, who leads the Epidemiology Team at UNAIDS. Michelle and Dr. Mahy have continued to collaborate on various projects, including Michelle’s Certificate capstone—a 90-hour project designed for students to gain hands-on experience in the field of global health.

Global WACh Graduate Certificate Capstone Presentations on May 27

Over the year, three students enrolled in the Global WACh Graduate Certificate have been hard at work on their 90-hour capstone projects that focus on the health and well-being of women, adolescents, and children.
They will be developing a research-style poster and virtually presenting their projects to a small group of Global WACh researchers on Thursday, May 27th. We celebrate the achievements and service of our students! Meet our students and see a summary of their projects below.

Tikhala Itaye, Global WACh Certificate student, in summer internship to aid gender equity strategies

This summer, Tikhala Itaye, a MPH Global Health and Global WACh Certificate student, began an internship with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). As a Summer Associate, Tikhala is supporting the Foundation’s Gender Equality Special Initiative (GESI) team to deepen an understanding of how existing program investments and activities affect or are affected by gender-based violence (GBV)—one of the most widespread human rights abuses that disproportionately affects girls and women.
Ending gender inequality in all forms is one of the World Health Organization’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tikhala’s efforts will provide strategic direction on integrating GBV prevention and response across the Foundation’s program cycle and investments. (more…)
Q&A with Emily Robson: Perspectives as a nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic

University of Washington students are rising to the occasion to care for the most vulnerable populations during Seattle’s COVID-19 outbreak. One of these students is Emily Robson, an incoming 2nd year Doctorate of Nurse Practice student in the Population Health Nursing Track and Global WACh Graduate Certificate student. Emily is spending her summer as a full-time Registered Nurse at King County Public Health’s COVID-19 Isolation/Quarantine Centers. These sites provide supervised care to symptomatic or COVID-positive individuals who cannot quarantine or recover in their own home, or do not have a home. These spaces support the community by providing a place of care and slow the spread of the virus to others.
We asked Emily to share her experience as an Isolation/Quarantine nurse and the lessons learned as she courageously and compassionately works on the frontlines of a public health emergency.
