Looting: It is reported by Young and Zheng that Japanese Generals ordered their soldiers to loot houses of the Chinese, as an award for taking over Nanjing. They claim that if there wasn’t anything to loot, they would kill the people who owned the house. This was disputed by some sources.

Arson: It was reported that almost all parts of Nanking was burnt because of arson caused by Japanese soldiers (Young, Zheng). It was claimed that most of this arson was caused because the Generals ordered soldiers to not leave any evidence.
