For the entertainment and enlightenment of a widening reading public, the English novel sprang from a number of literary roots, and from the first began to make its “novelty” a subject for parody and experimentation. Readings from Defoe, Fielding, Richardson, Walpole, and Mackenzie. Whether purchasing new or used copies, it is important that you obtain the Norton and Oxford World’s Classics editions listed for this course. If possible over the summer, read at least Defoe, Richardson, or Fielding.
