Overview
Our assessment is conducted to evaluate the courses and the multimedia CDs. Assessment activities include UW regular assessment, focus groups after each class, interviews/surveys, homework coding, as well as performance on the CD examinations.
Currently, we are contracting with Professor Carolyn Plumb, from Montana State University, and Dr. Heather in Washington D.C. for providing assessment services for us.
So far, we have completed more than 5 focus groups and surveys since the project initiated. Assessment data shows that
- The course is helping students to build a basis for future exploration of bioengineering
- The experience obtained from the project encouraged students to pursue career in bioengineering or related field
- The project increased the number of students who are involved in undergraduate research
- The multimedia CD has helped students in learning biology
- The project increased the number of female students and minorities involved in undergraduate research
Assessment files
Here are two documents we use in guiding the assessment of this course. The first one helped us to decide what questions we needed to ask, and helped us understand confusing outcomes. The second one, the pre/post survey, is what we give to students at the beginning and end of the class to help gauge whether they have changed their attitudes toward biology. We complement this survey with focus groups, and much later with phone interviews, to try and answer the questions posed in the outcomes model.
