Mind Teasers

CONCEPT: Calculating Phe

Participants complete a worksheet reviewing the information needed to calculate the phe content of foods and meals.

After completing this activity, children will be able to:

  • list two things that are needed on a food record to be able to calculate its phe content ( amount, kind of food)
  • find the phe content of foods by looking them up in the Low Protein Food List
  • calculate the phe content of a meal

Open the activity with a discussion about the PKU food pattern. What is the easiest aspect about the PKU diet?
What is the most difficult aspect about the PKU diet?

Complete the Worksheet:
Distribute the worksheet to the participants.

Explain: "Following your PKU food pattern can sometimes be difficult. There are so many things to learn and remember. Today we're going to do a few practice exercises to help make following the food pattern a little easier. If you know how much phe you are eating, it makes things much easier."

Give the participants time to work through the worksheet. Discuss the answers together.
