Display of Student-Designed Rugs
Rugs designed by School of Art students and created in Nepal through the 2010 Commissions Project will be on display on the mezzanine at UW Tower on Monday, 06 December, from 8am to 5pm. Professor Layne Goldsmith is the organizer of this annual project. Participating artists this year (some now alumni) are: Toto Hu, Hannah Levi, I-Wen Lai, Anne Nguyen, Amanda Parker, Hannah Riker, Molly Wheat, Tse-Hui Wu, Chein-Yun Yeh, and Lindsey Yuen. Betty Bowen Award
Ellen Lesperance (BFA 1995) received the 32nd annual Betty Bowen Award Grand Prize through the Seattle Art Museum in October. Another two of the five finalists this year also were School of Art alumni: Chris Engman (BFA 2003) and Emily Gherard (MFA 2004). The list of past Betty Bowen Award winners includes a significant number of our alums.
Lecture: Dominic Muren
This lecture by Dominic Muren is now scheduled for Tuesday, 07 December. It will start at 6pm in room 236 of the Art Building. He will speak about “Humblefacture: Turning Designers Into Makers,” presenting some of the progressive ideas he shared at TEDGlobal last summer. The lecture is organized by IDSA. Faculty News: John Young
YouCall That Art?! is the name of a new television show that will premier on Monday, November 22nd, at 7:30pm on KCTS-9 in Seattle. John Young, a professor in the Art Division, is the host. An article in UW Today tells the story behind the show, and there is a website with blog that provides additional information. Young and the other creators of the show will have a premiere celebration at the Two Bells Tavern on Monday. If you want to join them, be sure to RSVP.

IVA Exhibit + Opening!
Friday, November 19th, from 6-8pm, is the opening of the first Interdisciplinary Visual Arts senior show for this academic year. Twenty-one students will be exhibiting their work at the School of Art’s Sandpoint Gallery: Abigail Aguisanda, Sarah Bishop-Gretz, Scott Blue, Adam Cisler, Anna Coughlin, Johnny Damian, Talia, Finkelstein, Ana Margarita Ford, Kenny Hong, Kelsey Kay, Laura Kent, Karam Kim, Ji Yun Lee, Alice Lee, Michelle Nagasawa, Liz Rudisill, Jennifer Spinelli-McHenry, Noelle Marie Troyer, Alyssa Volpigno, Erica Nicole Waysville, and Molly Wheat. Professor Lou Cabeen has been the faculty member working with this group. The show remains up through November 28th. Hours and location information are on our calendar, including links to two maps.
Student News: Cole Benson
MFA Design student Cole Benson worked under the guidance of Assistant Professor Annabelle Gould to create a design package for CHI 2011, which is the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computer Systems. It is attended by more than 2,000 people from around the world, and it is. The conference takes place in Vancouver, BC, in early May 2011, but his work can already be seen on the conference website.
Faculty News: Paul Berger
Photomedia Professor Paul Berger had his work included in a recent book by Sylvia Wolf (Director, Henry Art Gallery) titled The Digital Eye: Photographic Art in the Electronic Age. He was on sabbatical leave during Spring Quarter 2010 and used the time to continue his research cycle for panoramic studies and expand his research into the areas of web design and web hosting of panoramic material.
It is free, at 7pm, and in Kane Hall, room 120. Lecture by Richard Kendall is titled “Picasso Looks at Degas: Homage, Mockery or Theft?” More information about Kendall and the lecture is available on our Google Calendar.
Digital Portfolio Workshop
School of Art students! Sign up now for a digital portfolio workshop on Friday, 03 December, from 10am – 12:30pm by emailing Doug Manelski. You will learn: how to photograph your artwork in the School of Art Digital Portfolio Studio (DPS; room 022); studio lighting and camera basics, including camera RAW; and professional quality documentation of artwork for submission to galleries and graduate programs.
