Alumni + Faculty News: Games of Antiquities

Tim Roda (MFA 2004) invited five other artists to participate in an exhibit with him at Gasser Grunert Gallery in New York from 09 September through 09 October 2010. Of the five, four have SoA connections: Associate Professor Doug Jeck, Jacob Foran (MFA 2010), John Byrd (MFA 2000), and Ryan Horvath (MFA 2004). The show was titled Games of Antiquities; the gallery became a form of coliseum and the artists were a type of gladiator.

Art History Seminar in Rome

Application & Information Packets for the annual Art History Seminar in Rome are available on the School of Art website!

The 2011 History Seminar in Rome will be co-taught by Professors Estelle and Stuart Lingo, both internationally recognized specialists in Italian art. The program seminar topic will be the transformation of Italian art in the Renaissance and Baroque periods (Art H 497); students will also study the art and architecture of Rome from ancient to modern times (Art H 397). Students earn 15 credits for their work abroad.

New(er) Staff Person

Kathy Mack joined the School of Art (SoA) in March as our new Constituencies Relations Officer. Kathy has a degree in art history from the SoA and comes to us from the UW Foster School of Business, where she spent three years working with the advisory board and donors. Prior to that, she held positions at KCTS, Seattle, and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

Constituencies refer to any individuals or groups who have a connection to the university and the SoA: donors, alumni, friends. Kathy’s responsibilities include connecting with and growing relationships with these SoA communities. She will also be working with the SoA board to further the mission of the school, and she will be coordinating all SoA events, both on and off campus. Faculty News: Foster Exchange

Associate Professor Karen Cheng and Assistant Professor Kristine Matthews collaborated on creating an interactive design installation for the recently opened Paccar Hall, which is part of the University of Washington Foster School of Business. The installation, known as the Foster Exchange, is in the Garvey Atrium, one of the most active public spaces in the building. It works in conjunction with a website that allows people to submit text for the wall and/or see what has been submitted by others.

The Stranger Genius Awards

Michael Van Horn (MFA 1987) has been the instructional technician in the Photomedia Program for many years. His own photography was recognized by The Stranger last month when he was short-listed for Visual Arts Genius Award. See an article about this year’s short lists online. Call for Work! School of Art Juried Show

School of Art students should start preparing now to submit work for an upcoming juried show. All or Nothing! will open on Tuesday, 09 November, and will run through Saturday, 04 December, at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery (room 132 in the Art Building).

Work must be submitted to the gallery on Tuesday, 02 November, between 10am and 4pm. Artwork not selected for the show must be collected on Thursday, 04 November, between 10am and 4pm.
Student artists must submit three (and only three) pieces of work. The artworks may represent any major, medium, or size. To be selected for the show, all three pieces must be selected (as the exhibit title says, it’s all or nothing).

The juror is Stefano Catalani, Director of Curatorial Affairs / Artistic Director at the Bellevue Arts Museum.

Student News: Sophie Milton

Sophie Milton, a senior in Visual Communication Design, spent her summer working on a project for the University of Washington School of Drama. She designed the posters for their 2010-2011 productions. Everyone was pleased with the results, including her faculty adviser, Assistant Professor Annabelle Gould, who said, “She really captured the ideas behind each play.”

Advance Notice: Shaw lecture at SAM

Gwendolyn Dubois Shaw is an Associate Professor of American Art at the University of Pennsylvania, and she holds the American Art History Professorship at the University of Washington School of Art during Autumn Quarter 2010. She will give a lecture, titled “Nascent: Raphaelle Peale, Sargent Johnson and the problem of Artistic Identity,” at the Seattle Art Museum at 7pm on Thursday, 28 October. The presentation examines issues of enacted biography in the work of two very different American artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), a still life and portrait painter from the Early Republican period, and Sargent Johnson (1888-1967), a sculptor and print maker from the era of the Harlem Renaissance. Tickets are available for advance purchase: $5 SAM members, $8 students and seniors, $10 general.
