UW TRIO Training uses Open Source Solutions

UW TRIO Training has been an active supporter of open source solutions and has utilized them extensively in creating its portal and online learning environments. It has also provided resources to encourage their use by TRIO programs and students.

The portal for TRIO training utilizes the following open source solutions:

  • CAS

    The Central Authentication Service (CAS) is a free single sign-on application that permits users to access multiple applications by providing their userid and password only once.

  • Moodle
    The Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (Moodle) is a free content management system used widely to deliver online courses and manage curricula and learners.

  • Drupal
    A free open source content management framework application used for sharing information, registration and submissions, and forums and resource management.

  • WordPress
    A free open source blogging tool and publishing platform with an easy to use Dashboard for administering posts, pages, and comments.


In addition, open source resources are recommended and frequently used by TRIO programs and their students including:

  • Open Office
    An open-source application suite with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics, and database components.

    GIMP
    The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is a free raster graphics editor for image retouching and editing.

    KompoZer

    A free and easy to use web authoring tool with both WYSISYG and HTML editing modes.

  • Audacity
    A popular free digital audio editor and recording application.
