Their contributions have strengthened our research, deepened our community partnerships, and helped us approach complex public health challenges with greater creativity and inclusivity. Read more below about our students and their work.
Destiny Cardenas | MPH, Department of Health Systems and Population Health

“I am originally from Yakima, Washington. I am pursuing an MPH in Health Systems & Population Health and I hope to continue doing public health work in rural communities after graduation! In my free time I love to read and foster cats. I am doing my capstone with Dr. Barbara Baquero and the Latinx Health Board. My capstone is titled “Assessing the role of video messaging in Apple Health access for Latino communities in Washington State.”
Samira Farrah | MPH, Department of Health Systems & Population Health

“As a first-generation Somali-American, my passion lies in developing innovative programs that empower underserved communities, advancing their emotional well-being and promoting health equity. My academic pursuits and professional experiences reflect my commitment to improving health outcomes and strengthening community ties through a lens of cultural diversity and inclusive practices. I hope to continue to grow and expand my knowledge in public health to not only benefit my direct community but also generations to come.”
Evelyn I Grijalva Martinez | MPH, Department of Epidemiology

I’m from LA, love running, and cooking/eating with family and friends. One of my passions is making sports nutrition and community nutrition more culturally inclusive!”
Kimiko Oshima | MPH, Department of Health Systems & Population Health

“I was born and raised in the Seattle-area and got my Bachelor of Science in Public Health-Global Health from UW in 2021 (Go Dawgs!). After graduation I hope to work in health education and communication. In my free time I love to teach skiing, bake, and spend time with family. Thank you to my family, mentors, and peers who have helped me along my career journey!”
Anya Quig | MPH, Department of Epidemiology

“My name is Anya (she/her) and I am a second-year MPH student in the Department of Epidemiology. I’m passionate about advancing equity through data-driven public health and translating research into practice. My interests include the equitable use of big data and data democratization to support more inclusive, community-centered health systems. In my free time, I enjoy biking, baking French macarons, and watching basketball.”
Madhu Raman | BS, Public Health – Global Health

“I was raised in Seattle for most of my life and UW was my top choice for my undergraduate studies! After graduation, I am pursuing my MS in Reproductive Epidemiology and hope to pursue my PhD after. Thank you to everyone at HPRC and the School of Public Health for making my time at UW so special!”
Melissa Resendiz Rivas | MPH, Department of Health Systems & Population Health

“I’m a first generation Mexican-American from Washington State, and my passion for public health was fueled from seeing the challenges my immigrant parents faced while trying to access care. Their experiences inspired me to support marginalized communities in navigating the complexities of the healthcare system. After graduation, I hope to step into a role where I can create meaningful change in my community by implementing effective programs and resources that support under-resourced populations.”
