Alumni News: Callie Neylan

Callie Neylan (MFA 2006) has started a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Graphic Design at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Neylan previously worked as a Senior Interaction Designer at National Public Radio, where she was one of the lead designers responsible for the redesign of the NPR website, and she was the art director for the development of an iPhone app. She has also been a guest faculty member in Graphic Design at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

Artist Trust Awards!

The two recipients of the first ever Arts Innovator Award from Artist Trust are both graduates of the School of Art: Leo Berk (MFA 1999) and Margie Livingston (MFA 1999). This is now the largest grant available to an individual artist in Washington State.

Artist Trust also announced this week its 2010 Grants for Artist Projects (GAP). Two faculty and several alumni received these awards: Chris Engman (BFA 2003), Eroyn Franklin (BFA 2006), Noah Grussgott (BFA 2008), Zhi Lin (Professor, Art), Yuki Nakamura (MFA 1997), Nicholas Nyland (BFA 1999), Nicki Sucec (MFA 2008), Mark Zirpel (Assistant Professor, Art), and Jennifer Zwick (BFA 2004).

Mark your calendar! Kendall lecture on Picasso + Degas

Health and Safety in the Arts: Printmaking

This Satuday, 09 October, starting at 1pm, there will be a free seminar on safely working with chemicals when creating art plus information on proper storage and disposal of these chemicals. It will take place in room 003 of the Art Building. This is part of the Art Hazards Project from the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program of King County, and it is jointly sponsored by Seattle Print Arts and the UW School of Art. Student News: Gayle Clemans

In November 2009, Princeton Architectural Press published The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography. The author is Katharine Harmon, but the essays were all written by our own Gayle Clemans, a PhD Candidate (or PhC) in Art History. Clemans is also a regular writer of exhibit reviews in local publications. A paperback edition of the book will be released in October 2010.

Upcoming Design exhibits

Two Design Division exhibits will run from 13 October through 30 October. One is titled The Humanization of Flight: Teague + UW ID and the other is Annabelle Gould, Visual Communication Design. The Teague exhibit has a reception on the evening of 12 October while Professor Gould’s exhibit reception will be after her lecture on the evening of 19 October. UW Rome Center at 25

Anyone who has ever had contact with the University of Washington Rome Center should attend this event. On Sunday evening, 17 October 2010, there will be a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the center. It will take place at the Seattle Art Museum, and advance registration (by October 11th) is required. General admission is $25; patron and benefactor level tickets are available.
