Strange Coupling 2012

Strange Coupling blog imageApplications are now being accepted from UW student artists who want to be paired with a Seattle-area working artist to create a collaborative piece. Applicants must also either volunteer at the Strange Coupling fundraising auction, which will be in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery at 7pm on Wednesday, 14 December 2011, OR donate an artwork to the auction. This year’s student artists and the couples will be juried by the Strange Coupling organizers with assistance from Kris Anderson, Director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, and Catharina Manchanda, Seattle Art Museum’s Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Some of the working artists will be Julie Alpert (MFA 2008), Tosh Beres, Ryan Feddersen, Troy Gua, Susie Lee (MFA 2006), and Amanda Manitach.

IVA Senior Show @UWArtSci @UW

IVA Senior Show Flyer - November 2011Opening Friday, 18 November 2011, at 6pm in the Sandpoint Gallery is the Senior Show for Interdisciplinary Visual Arts students in Autumn Quarter’s capstone class taught by Associate Professor Lou Cabeen. Participating students are Kalani Aldrich, Jason Braik, Cassie Chinn, Chun-Yi Chu, Abram Deslareles, Ryan Furness, Kristy Johanson, Elizabeth Karvonen, Chris Kasner, Acacia Kaufman, China Kay, Sarah Kuether, Julia Marie OʼCain (Jui), Beatriz Patlan, Brandon Pietenpol, Danny Shin, David Tapia, Olivera Teodorovic, and Long Tran. In addition to the opening reception, the exhibition will be available for viewing on Nov 19+20 and Nov 26+27 from noon to 6pm on each of those days. A map showing the location of the gallery in relation to other School of Art facilities is linked above.

Master of Design Open House @UW

UW Design logoAre you thinking about graduate studies in design? If yes, be sure to attend this event on Friday, 18 November 2011, from 10am-1pm. Faculty and current students will be available to answer questions about the Industrial Design (ID), Visual Communication Design (VCD), and Interaction Design (IxD) programs. There will be a formal presentation at 11:30am. You may RSVP on the Facebook event page.

Up until spring 2011, UW graduate students in the Design Division received an MFA degree. This summer the Board of Regents approved a Master of Design (M.Des) designation. Students graduating in 2012 and beyond will receive that degree.

GSAH Brown Bag Presentations @UW

The Graduate Students of Art History (GSAH) is a long-standing student organization in the School of Art. This quarter they have started a series of lunchtime brown bag presentations, which take place at noon in room 008 of the Art Building. Anyone may attend. On 15 November 2011, the presenter will be Julie Tanaka who manages the UW Grants and Funding Information Service (GFIS). She will provide information on funds available to graduate students, particularly those in the arts. Earlier presentations were by GSAH members Erin Giffin, Jennifer Henneman, and Kit Coty. Watch the calendar for more presentations during this academic year.

Lundin Lectures & Exhibit

Painting + Drawing Professor Emeritus Norman Lundin continues to direct Prographica, a Seattle gallery for fine works on paper. The current exhibit, The Architectural View, includes three School of Art alumni: Eric Elliott (MFA 2007), Laura Hamje (BFA 2008), and Elizabeth Ockwell (BFA 1967). At 2pm on Saturday, 12 November 2011, Lundin is launching a series of informal talks in the gallery. The current exhibit will provide a starting point for a discussion about abstract versus traditional approaches to depicting subject matter.

Lundin’s own work will be featured in an exhibition at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Willamette University. Titled Norman Lundin: Inside/Outside, the show will be up from 19 November 2011 through 22 January 2012. Lundin will be lecturing as part of the opening events at 5pm on Friday, 18 November 2011.

Wright Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Robin Wright; photo by Doug ManelskiOn 29 October 2011, at the Native American Art Studies Association (NAASA) conference, Art History Professor Robin Wright was presented with the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was in recognition of her teaching and scholarship; her work as the founding director of the Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Coast; the exhibitions she has curated at the Burke Museum as curator of Native American art; and her service to NAASA, which has included two terms on the board (1989-1997) and two terms as president (1999-2003).

Symposium: Streaming in from the Moon @henryartgallery

Henry Art Gallery logoOn Saturday, 19 November 2011, there will be a symposium to accompany the exhibition Carolee Schneemann: Within and Beyond the Premises. Organized by the Henry Art Gallery, the day includes a panel discussion in which Art History Professor Patricia Failing is a participant and a presentation by Jeannette Angel (MA 2010). Angel is currently a PhD student at University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus. Tickets are required for this event, but they are free for UW students and staff.

150+creativity+W_sml copyIn honor of the UW’s 150th anniversary, the College of Arts and Sciences will present Timeless Awards to 150 living alumni who demonstrate distinction in one or more of the following areas: excellence, inquiry, community, citizenship, accountability, or integrity. Previous award winners form the initial core of recipients, but the remaining 111 will be chosen from nominees. Which School of Art alumni will you nominate? The nomination form is available online, and the deadline is 05 December 2011.

Lecture about George Ault @henryartgallery

Alexander Nemerov with George Ault painting; photo from Smithsonian Magazine websiteJoin visiting lecturer Alexander Nemerov, the Vincent Scully Professor of the History of Art at Yale University, for a unique look into the work of George Ault and 1940s America. The lecture, at 7pm on Thursday, 17 November 2011, in the Henry Art Gallery Auditorium, draws from an exhibition and accompanying book titled To Make a World: George Ault and 1940s America, which were curated and written by Nemerov. The exhibition premiered at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in March 2011, is currently showing at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and will also visit the Georgia Museum of Art. This event is part of the Allan and Mary Kollar Lectures on American Art and Artists presented by the Division of Art History in the School of Art. Free tickets may be reserved online.

BuyART on Nov 16 + 17

Portion of poster for BuyArt 2011School of Art students and alumni will be selling their work at a sale in the Art Building’s Jacob Lawrence Gallery in mid-November. The event will be from 10am to 7pm on Wednesday, the 16th, and from 10am to 4pm on Thursday, the 17th. Seventy percent of the profits from sales go directly to the artist and thirty percent support the student intern program in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Art for sale will include work in many media including ceramics, glass, printmaking, painting, drawing, collage, and photography. Take advantage of this great opportunity!
