Patrick is a graduate student under Dr. Randie Bundy and Dr. Joseph Resing in the School of Oceanography, researching organic compounds that microbes produce to acquire trace metals like iron in the ocean. His research so far has examined these strong metal chelators in hydrothermal vents, iron-limited marine environments like the equator, and even in whale poop.
He grew up in a small agriculture community outside of Fresno, California, and received a B.S. with Honors in Earth Systems and a minor in chemistry at Stanford University. At Stanford, he studied the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide in anoxic regions of the ocean, where he first became interested in the biogeochemistry of extreme environments.
Outside of research, he is a radio DJ at SPACE 101.1FM Magnuson Park, enjoys camping and hiking on the weekends, and volunteers at the Seattle Aquarium.
