My research group focuses on carbon and nitrogen cycling in marine and aquatic ecosystem with an emphasis on the source, reactivity, and fate of organic materials. We address questions relevent for modern oceanograhic systems, astrobiology and exoplanets, urban biogeochemistry and sustainability, and geoengineering. We work to understand the conditions that make environments habitable in the broadest sense for organisms that range from ancient microbes to future humans, and from our own seafloor to the Ocean Worlds beyond Earth.
